A lot of people have heard about Nsibidi and seen a few of the symbols but not everybody knows the truth of how expansive Nsibidi or even the origins of the Nsibidi script so today i'll be breaking it down and giving the history of the Nsibidi script as well as more information on the script and it's different forms and uses

Furst off what is important to know is that Nsibidi isn't only a script it is actually broken down into three forms
Nsibidi writing
Nsibidi sign language
Nsibidi language

And i'll try and break all of these down as much as possible but it must be remembered that most information pertaining to Nsibidi is kept secret by the Ekpe Societies

The beginning of Nsibidi starts thousands of years ago in the forests of South East Nigeria back in those times hunters often spent multiple nights in the forest away from the village to hunt as much as possible in as short a time and to scare away the creatures of the forest they'd set up campfires around where they'd sleep for the night but there was one creature that wasn't scared of the fire and terrorized the hunters and they called it the Idiok they were an ape like creature but much larger and much scarier and this process continued night after night, week after week and year after year until a group of hunters from a place called Uguakim had the idea to simply watch the Idiok rather then running away and as they observed the Idiok they watched as they wrote symbols in the ground and used hand signals to communicate with each other after writing the symbols on the ground, it was from observing the Idiok that the people learnt of the Nsibidi script and the Nsibidi sign language.

From there the people realized the power of Nsibidi and began to formulate a secret society to guard the power of Nsibidi and this secret society was named the Ekpe society named after the Leopard a symbol of stealth and power among most groups in Ancient Africa. It was through this society that most knowledge of Nsibidi was kept and any and all knowledge of the spoken Nsibidi, Nsibidi sign language and symbols of Nsibidi pertaining to power, war and government were kept secret by this society.

But that doesn't mean that the people weren't able to learn Nsibidi there were specific symbols that were made public to the people such as those pertaining to love, friendship and basic pronouns such as man, woman, child, family etc.

Although many will disagree with the secrecy of Nsibidi it was actually very useful to the Ekpre Society who also functioned as a sort of policing system in those times because they were able to communicate messages to each other secretly without people knowing it was especially useful in times of war or unrest in which they were able to communicate to each other where to go meanwhile the enemies or the rebels wouldn't know what they were planning or what exactly they were to do next, some historians even attribute the strength of the Aro to the skillfullness of their warriors in communicating with each other whether through symbols or through sign language it was through this that they were able to conquer large swathes of Igbo land very easily.

The Ekpe society not only used Nsibidi as a form of communication but they also used it for religious purposes it is believed that only a few people at the top of the Ekpe society were taught the practice of Sigil magic or the magic that can be produced from the writing of very specific Nsibidi symbols on the ground unfortunately not much is known about this practice in its truest form due to the secrecy of the Ekpe society but there are great examples of it in Cuba as members of the society were often kidnapped and sold off in the slave trade and in fear of their knowledge being lost they taught it to other Africans around them and the practice lives on today as Abakua.

But the most useful use of Nsibidi was likely for court cases in which it was used to accurately describe the purpose, the attendees and the conclusion of the court case although most of these have not survived as they were often written on the ground with chalk or on tree trunks and artefacts which have been lost to time.

But Nsibidi still lives on today not only through the Ekpe Society but also through the Ikom Monoliths, ARtefacts such as Calabashes and bronzes, in shrines dedicated to different deities of the ancestors and probably most famously in Ukara Ekpe the sacred cloth worn by members of the Ekpe Society which often tell stories through the Nsibidi inscriptions on them.

To end it off i'll just like to say that Nsibidi isn't like any other script in existence especially due to it's abstract nature whilst most scripts of today are written from left to right or top to bottom Nsibidi is written in an abstract form there is still a form to it but it is often very random to the normal person as can be seen from the two pictures of court cases written in Nsibidi from the 1800s

I learnt from history classes that Igbos were the first black race to be civilized and use this language to communicate with each other back then when other tribes were yet to taste civilization

That's false the Igbos weren't the first race to be civilized all of the Niger Congo groups have a common ancestor and diverged around 3000 years ago but there is evidence of civilization in Africa from before 1000BC meaning the Igbos weren't the first or the last to be civilized but they were definitely among the first few after the original group.

Also Nsibidi isn't Igbo it comes from the Ejagham/Ekoi people but through trade and war it became part of Igbo culture and language as well and because it's an ideographic language there's no complication when transferring it from one language to another as symbols represent a singular idea or concept so it can bbe easily translated to any language which is why i'm in full support of Nsibidi being adopted as a national script for Nigeria same way the Chinese, Korean and Japanese people all have their own I hope one day Nigeria too can have its own that works alongside the latin script

Where did you get the same common ancestors of Niger Congo from ? Post genetic information on it from research work.

It's obvious they're of the same language group, share cultural festivals and foods for the most part and have common religious practices and if you bothered to do basic research you'd find that from research the most likely source of the Niger Congo group is from the confluence in the middle of Nigeria

How are they of the same stock when gene says otherwise? Linguistically, they are not related and if you have evidence on it, quote authors who stated categorically, that these other languages are protolanguage with Yoruba's. How is Egun and Yoruba language protolanguage despite proximity between the two ?

Which gene says otherwise? All evidence points to the Niger congo groups of Nigeria having common ancestry and apart from that there's the common practice of the New Yam festival, masquerades, ancestral veneration, Binary forms of 256 for divination practices, similar names for divination practices Ifa to Afa to Efa to Fa etc. And anybody who used up to 5 brain cells would be able to find the similarities in words and languages between Yoruba and Igbo there's nothing to deny

So,Ifa, Afa,Efa and Fa is your reason of divergence of West Africans? Quite funny man you are. Read about genes of West Africans differs, even if there are matrilineal links.

Of course genes differ we split over 3000-5000 years ago the longer groups have diverged for the more the change in DNA but we're both still very similar and share a common ancestor and yes the common name for a divination system is evidence of similarities in culture and DNA other wise why don't the Akan have a similar name or the Hausa?

Concerning those articles yes the so called ghost ancestor is a different hominid group which had inhabited that area before homo sapiens came and obviously the ancestors of the Yoruba and Mande ( Freed Yoruba Slaves In Sierra Leone ) mated with this different hominid but till this day they haven't been able to identify it or even name it but that doesn't prove that they don't share a common ancestor it just proves that there were different groups inhabiting different areas of the world

show us were Yoruba ethnic group share same Neanderthal ancestors via gene with pygmies related groups

Kindly face facts and stop posting information without genetic evidence. It is amazing how you lurk people up as if complexion is the same as genetic.

A typical modern example is Bob Marley, whose father was a white man and mother a darkskin woman. Today, Bob Marley sons and grandsons are both darkskin people and pure white Caucasian complexion. There are millions of Yoruba people who are Neanderthal descendants which differs from other Africans in west Africa.

And here you are claiming otherwise.People like you are so unrealsitic by trying to fuse Yoruba forcefully without having knowledge on these things. So so amazing.

1. They never said they were neanderthals they said a ghost ancestor meaning an unidentified hominid group that inhabited Yoruba land before Homo Sapiens come

2. The presence of a different hominid group in the DNA of the Yoruba doesn't equate that they share no genetic similarities with the Igbo unless they were more then 80% ancient hominid group but rather it isn't any more then 12% in most Yorubas

3. Hence the homo sapien part of their ancestry is shared with the Igbo that is a simple fact and I don't see why the Yorubas and Igbos on Nairaland continue trying to fight the clearly genetic link between them

the articles do not even imply Yoruba are not related to other west africans. The genes of an unidentified homind group found in examined yoruba and mande samples does not mean yoruba are now this unidentified hominid group instead of being homo sapiens. Also it is unidentified for a reason - it still appears only in small bearly noticeable portions and in few populations (at least as far as recent studies show, more studies will still be carried out).

When we talk of genetic correlation in Africa we tend to speak of haplogroups - I find the Y-dna pretty easy to comprehend.
Fathers's father's father's...and so on.
And the dominant Y-dna haplogroup in Sub saharan Africa is the E1b1a, especially with its subclade E-m2 spread across West and central africa and due to the bantu exapansion also southern africa.
This haplogroup is essentially carried by those one might consider your typical "negroid".

According to recent studies, the Haplogroup might have developed in the green sahara and spread due to its desertification
Below a few ethnic groups and the frequency

I doubt if you use your two naked eyes to read what the ghost dna was later analysed to be.

You are te first of all persons who find it hard to acknowledged the difference include gene between Ibos of Eastern Nigeria and it Yoruba people of Western Nigeria as well as other places.

Kindly show us where real geneticists compared Yoruba and Ibo ethnic group genetically match with written account.

Furthermore you lied angry that the ghost dna is not a Neanderthal gene grin cheesy cheesy grin.
At first dna was unusal and until further probing where it had been affirmed as Neanderthal . Quickly the pygmy gene do not exist in Yoruba 's gene while it does appears Ibo of Eastern Nigeria.

Visit science journal site or subscribe for it to educate yourself and stop posting view which is self gloriifying and false because Africans carry surprising amount of Neanderthal DNA
People on every continent, including Africa, have a genetic legacy from our extinct cousins.

And what about the homo sapien gene that actually makes up the fucking majority of the DNA combination? This neanderthal and pygmy gene isn't even up to 20% and I already said they share a common human ancestor and as they went to their respective regions they ended up getting the genes of the aboriginal hominids but they still carry majority of their DNA from their common homo sapien ancestry

There is no need to over flog issue because there is non issue at all.

You see, Homo sapiens aren't the purpose of these messages interchange, rather Gene and not just Dna of Yorubas and other affiliated groups with Yorubas whose ancestry is admixture genetically which is of Neanderthal .

The Neanderthal gene is a father to son heritage and not maternal link. So, what the Yoruba gene is saying is that, the Yorubas are modern mankind as compared to ancient human, which has prompted the curious European and western researcher to always separated Yorubas from many African dna.

Afterall, the Yorubas are not one of the oldest bone in the world , even Africa. The Yorubas as a group do not share same Dna with ibos even with proximity of both groups. This is the point.
