Chief Executive of Chester Engineering, United States Mr. Bob Agbede has offered $50 million scholarship to best graduating engineering students in Nigeria.
The scholarship will be spread over the next 10 years and recipients would be free to pursue Master’s degrees in engineering in any US university.
The scholarship will be administered by the Institute of Directors (IOD), Nigeria.
Agbede said the gesture was his way of thanking God for his life and giving back to the society.
Four students from the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and University of Lagos (UNILAG), who had grade point averages of 4.12 and above, have been shortlisted for consideration for the scholarship.

Sounds like a swell guy. I'm glad he hasn't forgotten Nigeria despite having been abroad for so long.

Robert O. Agbede (ENGR '79, '81G at Pitt), president and CEO of Chester Engineers Inc., in Moon Township, pledged $50,000 to support a need-based scholarship for students from underrepresented groups-including African Americans and African émigrés-aspiring to the STEM fields

^-- So you think that this $50,000 need-based scholarship is the same as the merit-based one he is doing in Nigeria?

Possible that the newspaper botched it.

But I don't think that $50k is enough to pay a year's worth of tuition for 4 foreign engineering students (not sure what average tuition is, but I'd guess north of $20k/year for foreign students.)

EDIT: Though rereading the newspaper writeup, it says "shortlisted" rather than "awarded." So maybe only one will get it at the end of the day, and this $50k figure you propose is the true #? I don't know.

what is the criteria for selecting beneficiaries
In private UNI you can see many graduates that made it above 4.5
why are they particular with Federal UNI.
Are we not part of Nig. Edu System.
Discrimination of the highest other.

wat on earth do u need schorlarship for, what bout the poor/?
even here in th usa, there is a limit to everything, if u go to a private uni, u get less schorlarship and everything, if ur papa get money, No grant for u, he pays for ur school fees
n ur prob in a glorified sec schol, calling it Uni, anyways
plus it a private schorlarship, no discrimination, he can do his funds however he likes, this is no discrimation

Mr man, ur 4.5 in private university is equivalent to 3.0 in government owned universities. I have a friend that graduated with 2:1 from a private university and the guy did not merit it but it was given to them by the university because they were the first set of graduates from the university and it was done to attract more people to the school. How do u justify that?. It's similar to what happens in private sec schools whenever they sit for S.S.C.E, they always give answers to students so that they will perform well generally and u know what that means. good results, more people.

this money should be invested in technical education, to train more brick-layers, capenter, mechanics, electricians, welder, we have enough of these graduates doing nothing. lot of engineers ended up in the finance industries.

The Robert O. Agbede Scholarship Pledges One Million Dollars to S.T.E. M. Education

The Scholarship will help minority students globally pursue their educational dreams

Robert O. Agbede, Chester's president and CEO announces a major investment that will positively impact the lives of thousands of African American students throughout the United States, Africa and the Caribbean. Mr. Agbede is pledging one million dollars to S.T.E.M. Education through "The Robert O. Agbede Scholarship" that is designed to help minority undergraduate students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering and/or mathematics. "I believe a solid education is the greatest equalizer and it helps to break down barriers. The goal is simple, to improve educational opportunities for African American students in the United States, especially those students attending Historically Black Colleges and to reach students in Africa and the Caribbean," said Agbede.

Agbede says on a personal level he has a deep desire to help students pursue their educational goals because he is so thankful for all those individuals who helped him along his pathway to success. As a Lagos, Nigerian native, Agbede recalls being able to attend a school established by the Ford Foundation in his country, and he attributes that opportunity with helping to prepare him for the success that he has achieved today. He is dedicated to making sure minority students have the same hope and opportunity that he had growing up and that is why he plans to contribute one hundred thousand dollars per year for the next ten years to help students pursue their dreams.

At Chester Engineers, Agbede has developed a work culture that emphasizes the importance of giving back, viewing corporate social responsibility as good business. Chester engages with small/minority businesses and students in areas of mentoring. The Robert O. Agbede Scholarship at the University of Pittsburgh benefits African American students pursuing engineering degrees. Also at the University of Pittsburgh, the Robert O. Agbede Annual Diversity Award encourages recruitment and retention of African American faculty and students. Chester Endowments at the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University, presently valued at over 3 million dollars, support African American student enrollment and retention primarily in Engineering and Sciences.
