Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, is set to commence the implementation of the Tertiary Institution Social Health Insurance Programme (TISHIP) for the health benefits of its students.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sunday Elom dropped the hint recently while receiving some officials of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) led by the Ebonyi State Coordinator, Dr. Ken Ogbu at his conference room.

The Vice-Chancellor noted that Management will ensure that all students of the University are registered under the programme to ensure efficient health service delivery in the institution. He also assured that staff will be informed of the enormous benefits of registering with the National Health Insurance Scheme, to enable those that were yet to be registered be captured in the Scheme.

While making his opening remarks, the Ebonyi State Coordinator, NHIS, Dr. Ogbu emphasized the need for staff and students of the University to be registered with the National Health Insurance Scheme and Tertiary Institution Social Health Insurance Programe (TISHIP) respectively, pointing out that the main focus of the Federal Government in establishing NHIS is to provide accessible healthcare for all Nigerians.

He therefore appealed to the Vice-Chancellor, as a matter of law, to ensure the immediate constitution of a TISHIP Committee to oversee the smooth take-off and management of the programme in the University, in order to ensure quality health service delivery for students.

TISHIP is a health programme of the Federal Government meant for students of tertiary institutions in Nigeria, geared towards providing them with accessible healthcare services within and outside their school campuses, especially at NHIS registered health facilities. It is managed under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Earlier, the Director of Health Services, Dr. Henry Aloh noted that the University keyed into the NHIS in 2013 with over 1, 000 of her staff fully registered in the Scheme. He explained that the reintroduction of the TISHIP in the University will help students to access health services even when they are not on campus.
