Tik Tok made waves when it announced its sponsorship of the African Cup of Nations, the continent’s biggest football tournament. Kennedy Ekezie-Joseph, who spearheaded Tik Tok’s entry into Africa, is no longer with the company for this moment of triumph. Instead, he grinds at a new startup. Big mistake? Maybe not. Leaving a budding career at a social networking giant that has big ambitions on your home continent to found a startup sounds like a suicidal move. But for Kennedy Ekezie-Joseph, 23, who was part of a small group leading Tik Tok’s push into Africa and was well-positioned to capitalize on the company’s continental ambitions, it actually wasn't, That became clear when his startup received record seed funding. Ekezie-Joseph’s startup Kippa is an accounting and finance app he co-founded with Duke Ekezie (his brother) and Jephthah Uche in February 2021. Since its launch in June, it has experienced a meteoric development. In November, the company raised $3.2 million in pre-seed funding, arguably one of the largest early-stage fundraising in Africa. Mobile and whatsapp friendly, Kippa is aimed at small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), providing them with free, easy-to-use accounting software. Kippa then reviews potential funding opportunities and generates revenue by collecting commission fees and earning interest by lending working capital to companies.
