If there’s one thing that’s prominent in today’s world, it’s the use of special “lingo” to describe things that can be understood in easier terms. However, in a different turn of event, we’d like to break down the basics of programmatic advertising to new entrants, people trying to get into the business etc.
A program by definition simply is a set of instructions that terminates. You go to an event and you go through the “Programme” and you see how the event is meant to go and how it ends.
Simple.
In programmatic advertising, you give your Ad server instructions on how to place your ads, the time to place them, the people to show them to etc. So we’ll start with some fundamental terms:
1. Demand Side Platform(DSP): In advertising basics, there are two parties in general; Advertiser and Publisher — Demand and supply. So a Demand side platform is for the most part and aggregation of Advertisers or advertising campaigns into one unit with the focus of getting publisher or supply inventory to satisfy and execute such campaigns.
2. Supply Side Platform (SSP): In an reverse, a supply side platform is an aggregation of publishers be it websites, apps, blogs etc with various ad spaces being made available for advertisers or in larger scale DPS’s to bid purchase such inventory in units.
3. Ad Server: An Ad server as the name connotes is the means in which you deliver the ads to the customer. Most times digital marketers use platforms which have their ad servers already but with people running more campaigns and diverse requirements, they tend to use their own ad server or those of a technology provider like Google, Admixer, Amazon, Cybertron Ads etc.
4. Data Center: Ad servers store data. Those data are stored physically in datacenters around the world. Why is this information important? Well, from a little geography, having two data centers from buying and selling parties at opposite ends of the world means the distance in communication is a lot longer and slower with various openings for errors etc.
5. Mode of Integration: For the most parts, the DSP and SSP have means of integration that is suitable for them. Some still use a banner and tracking URL, some use JS (JavaScript) tags and some others use RTB(real-time bidding), Header bidding etc as various modes of integration. It’s usually best to have at least two alternatives so when you’re discussing with a potential partner you can have good chances of sealing the partnership.
While these are not the end all-be all of programmatic advertising, they serve as the core that shapes most of your dealings in the space. It’s advisable to get the basics and core definitions of digital advertising such impressions, targeting, clicks, conversions, etc. so as to have these terms and activities be a lot easier to grasp with.
