ok, i just asked to be sure that you are not swimming in the fantasy of studying engineering because you want to work for oil company and make money, if that is your aim, then there are other better and faster ways of doing it. And one of the ways is to study and make a very good grade(preferably a first class) in mathematics/statistics, But if you really love engineering, then please by all means go for it--

@digit90 nice thread. Well of all the methods the gaussian or gaus jordan elimination method and the triangular decomposition method(aka crouts method) i'm ok with.

The iterative methods to are ok i.e gauss siedel and Jacobi iterative method the only prob with them is they are time consuming due to iterations.

The Triangular decomposition says you write the system of equations as vector matrices first. I.e. Ax = b

Now let A = LU
where L = lower triangular matrix:
L11 0 0
L21 L22 0
L31 L22 L33

and U = upper triangular matrix
1 U12 U13
0 1 U23
0 0 U33

Now multiply LU above and equate it to A using the elements in the matrix A to obtain d value for L11, L21, L22, L31, L22, L33 as well as U12, U13, U23 and U33.

After getting these values ur
Ax = B the becomes
LUx = B

let Ux = P where P is a single Columbus vector matrix. I.e
P1
P2
P3.

Now instead of LUx = B use LP = B. Use this to solve for P and get the values for P1,2 and 3.

Thereafter use Ux = P. Since u now know the values for P1, 2,3 as well as U. Hence u obtain the value for X1, X2, X3.

I'd explain jacobi and gauss siedel later. It involves an iterative process using a formula till u get to a convergence point.
