Yes, Amunike was the regular left winger. Okay, Ikpeba was a substitute for Tunisia 94. But was part of the unused players for the 94 World Cup.

I still remember as a youngster how I cried that day that Italy eliminated Nigeria from the USA 94 world cup

A bit of background.


In 1994 the Super Eagles of Nigeria won the African Nations Cup and qualified for the FIFA World Cup for the first time ever. In keeping with tradition, the then head of state, General Sani Abacha, gave the players national honours (Member of the Order of the Niger [MON) and promised to give them a house each in the state of their choice.

This has been a tradition in Nigeria. In 1980 when the Green Eagles won the Nations Cup, President Shehu Shagari gave each player a house in Festac Town, a national honour (MON) and a car (Peugeot 504) and in 1985 when the Golden Eaglets won the FIFA Under 16 World Cup, General Buhari named a street after each of the players (that's why we have Fatai Atere Way in Lagos) and promised them a house each.


However, although the players of the 1980 Eagles got their gifts immediately (and even more gifts from private companies), the 1985 and 1994 teams did not get theirs (remember that General Buhari was removed from office shortly after China '85).

The present administration has been redeeming promises made by previous administrations and so they have given members of the 1994 teams houses in Federal Government estates in their chosen states. The Federal Ministry of Works and Housing is currently building estates in states across the country and players of the 1994 team are given houses in the new estates.

Members of the 1985 Golden Eaglets were also given two million naira each in 2016. However, after it was announced that the 1994 Eagles would get houses, some of the 1985 Golden Eaglets have complained that they also want houses. They said that the government only fulfilled some of the promises made to them in 1985 (like naming streets after them and taking them to watch the 1986 World Cup in Mexico), but the promise of a house and car were never fulfilled. They also said that the government prevented them from moving to Europe in 1985, because they said that they were national properties. They said that they would have made a lot more money if they were allowed to move to Europe like the players of the 1994 team.
