IN its reinvigorated war against the distribution of medicines in open markets and unlicensed premises and persons, the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) has sealed off over 200 premises and shops at Cemetery Market and New Market both in Aba, Abia State.

The Council also urged the state Police Command to prevent the owners of the sealed premises from continuing their illegal trade therein.

The closure of the shop followed the swoop on the two markets on Tuesday by the PCN Inspection Team led by the state Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) Chairman, Emeka Ogbonna.

Ogbonna, while addressing journalists on Wednesday, said the sealing of the shops was in accordance with the laws of the country and for the benefit of the public.

He added: "The premises/shops in these two markets are now sealed, medicines are not allowed to be sold in them again. The PCN hereby calls on the Abia State Police Command to maintain surveillance in these premises and arrest any person found contravening the law there".

The PSN chief urged pharmaceutical companies in Nigeria to stop their representatives from selling or distributing their products through unlicensed persons and unlicensed premises. .

He said doctors should prevail on their patients to procure their prescriptions only from or through registered, licensed persons or premises just as he solicited the support of all and sundry for the success of the PCN set to dismantle all illegal and unlicensed medicine shops or premises that "have become safe havens for medicine fakers and places where fake and counterfeit medicines are sold to the people".

good ,drugs should only be purchased by registered pharmacist and not just any store,i hope all other states are watching and do the same thing in their states.the next step people will have to provide doctors prescription before they can purchase drugs that way we avoid drug abuse, resistance and can easily trace fake or un licensed drugs. maybe orji can score a cheap point with this one cheesy

Here we go again. The military mentality. Were these markets not closed by Dora sometime in the past? You just wake up, recruit the police and enter a market and close all the shops in sight. No planning, no attempt to give the owners enough time to find something else to do. This is Aba. Unemployment will only lead to kidnappings again. I hope we have enough registered pharmacists in Nigeria with enough well stocked outlets to serve the general public. The pharmacists contineu to do everything to control these outlets but they dont seem prepared to feel the vacuum that will be created if all "chemist shops" are closed in a go. It is good to have trained hands dispensing drugs, but the wider availability of drugs especially in the rural areas should not be overlooked. There maybe a need to licence other trained health workers to help and I dont know if they PCN is constitutionaly capable of "closing peoples shops" at the drop of a hat.

Re: Council Seals 200 Medicine Shops In Abia by chino11(m): 9:21am On Jul 07, 2011
Abia state is nothing more than garbage sites .They should close all the shop in abia state because they are death chemists shop. The last I pass thru Aba was when I knew that federal gov should declare aba a disaster and failed state in Nigeria, there is no government presence in that slum called abia state. Its really a disgraceful state in the SE. Infact we can dash abia state to SS or the North to save us from this embarrasment

Very commendable!

Too many cases of self-medication!

But then, they should also consider the fact that most Nigerians have little or no access to quality healthcare. Even those with access are too poor to afford it - hence self-medication.

They should follow this up with an improved healthcare system

You mind them. While other councils are looking out for the welfare of their professionals by engaging in acts that protect their interests,  MCDN's only concern is collecting registration/licensing fee.  angry

The other day The medical Lab Council was at my facility and threatened to shut the lab down unless a registered lab scientist, and not a technician as was the case, was employed to care for the lab. \\

kudos to them

Abia state really need prayers, they kill people with fake drugs and they are the not good at delivering quality service
Re: Council Seals 200 Medicine Shops In Abia by vislabraye(m): 4:24pm On Jul 08, 2011
Don't know if the shop sells fake drugs.

But if genuine well, they should be allowed to. But you may not blame them because there are certain guys who love
money so much that they dont mind endangering the lives of fellow mankind. We know Aba has its good sides and bad sides. They are good imitators.
But the issue here should be whether the drugs sold are fake or genuine.
Re: Council Seals 200 Medicine Shops In Abia by Gbenge77(m): 4:31pm On Jul 09, 2011
I wonder if the menace of fake drugs can be eradicated in Nigeria.
