The Church In Jerusalem
(Acts 2:43-47, 4:32-37)

Jesus Christ established the Church during his ministry. The apostles were the foundation members of the Church. By the time of his death and Ascension, the members of the Church numbered only one hundred and twenty. Peter was in charge as their leader. He was assisted by the rest of the apostles. The number of the Christians rose to three thousand following the baptism of those who repented after Peter's speech on the day of Pentecost. The number again increased to over five thousand after Peter's speech in connection with the healing of the lame man at the Beautiful Gate of the Temple.

All the members of the Church came together as one group and established their own community. It was not easy to organize the lives of such a large number of people. All of them were from different homes with different habits: some of them were of good character, others were of doubtful character; some of them were honest and generous, others were dishonest and selfish; some of them were rich, others poor; some of them were highly educated, others had little or no education.

What united all these different members of the Church was their common faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, the apostles organized their lives around the teachings of Jesus as they had been taught by Jesus himself. Everyday they taught the people; and, they responded well to their teaching. In addition, they worshipped together. They met for prayers and attended service in the Temple as a group. They also celebrated the Holy Communion together and shared the bread and the wine as taught them by Jesus Christ. All this created strong fellowship among the members of the early Church.
