Every total man needs a complete wardrobe. A complete wardrobe doesn’t have to be the most expensive or trendiest, but one that captures the various clothing items for every season and occasion. A closet with only corporate outfits remains incomplete, though it may be worth millions of naira. So, setting up a complete wardrobe shouldn’t cost you a fortune. On a shoestring budget, anybody can build one. The aim is to get the most style and versatility with a minimum number of clothing pieces.

On that note, we shall check out some wardrobe essentials for the Nigerian man. With this, you should be able to set up a wardrobe that isn’t influenced by seasonal fashion trends. Regardless of your personal style, be it corporate or clean-cut casual, this is a timeless mix that will cover you for all seasons, events, and occasions.

So, style up like the African king you are and ensure these essentials are in your closet.

1. Plain Black Suit
Go through the heading again; I said black suit, not black coat. A proper Nigerian bro understands what I am saying. You should have a black-colored fitted suit in your closet, even if your favorite colors are burnt-orange or turquoise brown. In fact, a black suit should be the first suit you acquire, especially if you can't afford the different colors on the spectrum.

Black is a timeless color that complements all skin tones. A black suit exudes luxury and gives you that quintessential classic appearance. It fits well with formal and informal settings, so you can rock it to the office, church, or a romantic dinner with your queen. If you can afford just one suit, then make it a plain black suit with no unique designs or patterns. You don't want everyone to notice that you're wearing the same suit all the time.

2. White Long-Sleeve Shirt with Collar
A white long-sleeve shirt is essential and the foundation of any stylish man’s wardrobe. You don’t have to be a lawyer or a chorister to own one. It can be a dress shirt, an oxford, or a packet shirt. Whatever appellation it goes by, a crisply ironed white long-sleeve shirt radiates confidence and adds luster to your appearance. This is especially important if you are dark-skinned. Fashion experts also recommend it for formal occasions, such as interviews and board meetings.

3. Jeans
Jeans are undeniably versatile and durable, making them a must-have in every man’s wardrobe. They are one of the most powerful and useful clothing items in a man’s wardrobe and can be combined to suit any occasion, such as work, a party, or a date. A tough outfit like jeans is required to make you smart enough to navigate Nigerian cities. In today’s world, it’s unusual for a young man not to have at least one pair of jeans in his wardrobe.

They come in various styles, designs, and colors, but whatever your choice is, make sure you have a pair of blue and black-colored jeans in your wardrobe. These colors blend well with most outfits.

4. Native Wears
Nigerian traditional attire is one fascinating aspect of our culture. Gone are the days when only English regalia were classy and trendy. These days, native wear has become the headliner, both at events and at the corporate level. Native outfits should be a part of every Nigerian man’s wardrobe. You will need them to showcase your African and Nigerian heritage at traditional weddings, funerals, and child dedications, among other occasions. Add some native wear to your clothesline so you're not caught off guard when the occasion arises.

Nigeria’s diverse cultures and ethnic groups provide a plethora of options. Some general ones include Senator, Ankara outfits, kaftan, Isiagu, and Agbada. Aside from native wear from other tribes in the country, you should also get some of your tribe’s indigenous attire in your closet.

5. T-Shirts
Every Nigerian man should have some tees in his wardrobe. T-shirts are the ideal combination of simplicity and comfort, and their versatility enhances your style in a variety of ways. You may use them to fill the gaps in your wardrobe without spending a fortune. They’re also easy to put on when you’re in a hurry. As there are no buttons or zippers, you literally throw them on. It is an effortless and adaptable piece of clothing, and there’s always a style, fit, and color for every man.

6. Joggers
Joggers are no longer restricted to the gym, even though they are designed for exercise. They have evolved into a key wardrobe essential. You can look classy yet casual in a pair of joggers. It’s more like saying, “I’m a man of class and style, but right now my mood is informal.” While joggers aren’t considered formal wear, we can style them to suit different dress codes or events. It is one notable fashion item that deserves a spot in your wardrobe.

7. Shorts
In Nigeria, where the weather is hot, shorts provide you with the luxury of style, comfort, and airflow, exposing your skin to more oxygen. They’re also a good option if you’re not doing business or attending a formal ceremony or event. For gym rats, putting on shorts offers you the opportunity to show off those well-sculptured thigh muscles and calves you spent time working on. Shorts are a timeless wardrobe essential anytime.

8. Neckties
Ties have undoubtedly withstood the test of time to become one of the modern man’s wardrobe staples. They’re versatile pieces that can be worn in several ways and situations. No man’s wardrobe is ever complete without a tie in it. You may have a handful of bow ties, but you need more neckties to match your outfits.

9. Caps/Hats
There is a hat for every occasion, whether formal or casual. The challenge is in choosing the right one that suits the event. However, you can start with baseball caps. They are the most common and preferred type of cap for men because you can wear them with almost any casual outfit. Besides being a fashion accessory, the baseball caps double as a sun-shield in sunny weather.

Also, incorporate some traditional caps into your fashion collection. Native caps have a cultural significance, and they complement the traditional outfits. Interestingly, every ethnic group has a specially crafted cap for their attire. On that note, the native caps you purchase should complement the various traditional regalia in your wardrobe.

10. Black Corporate Shoes
A good outfit should be worn with good quality shoes. It is speculated that a woman’s first impression of a man is his shoes. A quality black corporate shoe will always stand out. So you can start by investing in some quality ones. I’m particular about the color black because it is appropriate for most formal occasions like weddings, funerals, and job interviews, and it goes with every color of shirt, trousers, and even native outfits (for native outfits, use laceless and buckleless shoes).
