Billionaire Tech Entrepreneur, Elon Musk, announced via a tweet on Friday that his satellite internet service, Starlink, has been approved by the Nigerian government to begin operations in the country. The news came as a slice of hope and excitement for many Nigerians because this might be the solution to the epileptic services offered by existing Telecommunication companies (MTN, Glo, Airtel, Etisalat).

Launched by spaceX, the satellite internet service is designed to provide high speed internet to its users, regardless of their location. According to Elon Musk, “Starlink will serve everywhere on Earth that we’re legally allowed to serve”. So, this simply means that whether you are in a rural or urban area, you can get access to the premium internet coverage rendered by Starlink. Its internet coverage is said to have an internet speed of about 160 MBPS and enables streaming, video calls, messaging and other data consuming activities.

Although this news comes at a time when Nigerians seek a better replacement for current internet service providers, Starlink might cost an arm and a leg for the average Nigerian. Currently, it costs about $599(about 360,000 Naira) to purchase the entire setup equipment, after which users pay a monthly subscription fee of $110(about 66,000 Naira). Aside from the steep pricing, the international monthly spending limit of $20 poses another challenge for Nigerians who might be able to afford subscribing to Starlink. The good news is Vella got you covered!
