What you guys don't know is; it is only big people that have that #100 then.

That #100 is equivalent to #100k now

It is a lie, bro. I intentionally asked my father about it.

According to the presenter of this items list, this was in 1984, these prices had even gone up compared to 1979 when Shehu Shagari took over from Obasanjo. The economy was getting bad by the misruling of Shagari, being the reason why Buhari/Idiagbon overthrew him. And things never got better which made Babangida overthrew Buhari in 1985 when Idiagbon went for Hajj in Saudi Arabia. May God deliver us in this country.

That list was not in "happy times" 1984

Buhari cam to power on 31st December 1983
Within a few weeks people were queuing to buy Omo,oil and rice. Buhari ordered traders to sell at an approved price and when they did not soldiers stormed warehouses to seize goods.Which were sold to the public in long queues and these things became known as essential commodities.
In reality within a few weeks of coming to power prices doubled

I can not remember the price of sunflower vegetable oil on queue purchase. An incident while queuing won't make me forget bag of rice at 52 naira. But this posted '84 list is sham

Minimum wage was ₦125 in the 1980s. I think it was set during in 1980 or 1981. It was in 1991 it was increased to ₦250. I remember buying a bar Mars chocolate either in 1981/82 for 50kobo

I remembered buying a Kongo of garri for ₦2 80in 1988 and it was considered expensive!

A bottle of coke was 50k then. I remember my mum giving ₦20 to hand over to my Aunty so that I can purchase a bottle of maltina daily because I was always coming home from the boarding house very skinny. Maltina then was ₦1.00.

That's not true. It's not only big people that 100naira those days. Even if you say that 100naira is 100k today (which I sincerely doubt), you didn't factor in inflation. Prices of goods were much more stable that it is now hence people were able to save, plan their budget and spending and acquire certain things with some ease. Today, price of goods can change thrice in a week which makes your savings useless

Structural adjustment program presented to Nigeria by IMF and accepted by the then General Babangida laid foundations for the devaluation of Naira.

Why do people like posting this without also posting average salaries from 1980's? I know you're trying to make a point, but please do it with some perspective.

If I showed you pictures of what you could buy with cowries and salt in 1780's you would be amazed.

Fun fact: sal, the Latin word for salt, was often used as payment to Roman legionnaires - their salarium, is what we now call salary.

In 1985 ₦1 was more than $1.

Now, let's say both currencies were equal.

How much is a minimum wage of $200 now?

Did I hear you say ₦120,000?

Yeah.

Without adjusting for inflation.
