10 Punk Anime Characters You Need To Know by ultrapost: 6:17pm On Jun 29, 2022
This is a pretty niche topic, but it’s an important one: What makes a character in anime stand out? Why are some characters easily loved, while others are impossible to look at? After all, we don’t all have the same taste, and no two people will have the same type of reaction to any given anime. This is especially true for shows that get premiered on digital streaming services, like Crunchyroll or Netflix. Which leads us back to the topic of this article – punk anime characters. These are characters who aren’t afraid to act unusual or be different from society as a whole. They don’t care what other people think of them and they know who they are and what they want out of life. Here are some examples of punk-anime characters you should get acquainted with:

Haruhi Suzimiya

If you’ve ever been a high school student, you’ve definitely encountered the SOS Brigade. Haruhi Suzimiya, the main character in the The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzimiya, is a oddball with a huge passion for all things odd. Though she may not be a typical punk-anime character, she’s one hell of an engaging protagonist that fans love to follow. When you watch an episode of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzimiya, you have the feeling that the entire world is about to fall apart. It feels like you’re watching a person going through a nervous breakdown. Though the series isn’t exactly the healthiest thing in the world, it’s extremely fun to watch and comes highly recommended.

Yandere-Chan

Yandere-Chan is an upcoming anime based off of the manga of the same name. The story follows a high school girl named Yui who has been rendered catatonic by trauma. She’s been in this state for years now, and nobody knows why. As the story progresses, we learn that Yandere-Chan is actually a yandere. This is an obsessive stalker who has been groomed to believe that they are in love with the subject of their obsession. Yandere-Chan is an interesting and complex character that takes the yandere trope and turns it on its head. It’s not safe to be around Yandere-Chan; you’ll end up dead if you’re caught in her sights. But watching her go through the process of recovery is fascinating and a lot of fun to watch.

Kagura Kirishima

The story of Haikyuu follows a group of volleyball players at a Shohoku High School in Tokyo, Japan. The team is led by their captain, the very talented and cute Tanaka. He’s supported by a group of colourful and interesting secondary characters that make up the rest of the team. One of these students is the very punk-like Kagura Kirishima. She’s a very aggressive and intimidating player who uses very little strategy in her game and relies on pure strength alone. She’s the kind of character you don’t want to face in a volleyball game, but you can’t help but root for her as she tries to prove that she can be a professional athlete.

Nano Shinonome

Nano Shinonome is the main character of Osomatsu-San. She’s a spunky and quirky girl who loves her family and friends very much. But, like most of us, she’s also a bit of a crybaby. Nanoka is a very balanced punk-anime character who doesn’t take any sh*t from anybody, especially her family. She’s blunt, sometimes inappropriate, and always honest. She’s been through a lot in her life and has come out a strong and independent girl, who isn’t afraid to tell people how she feels.

Mio Akiyama

Mio Akiyama is the protagonist of the To-Love-Ru series. She’s a very eccentric girl who likes to collect stuffed animals and can be seen wearing bunny ears and a yellow ribbon most of the time. Mio is a very strong and resilient character who gains powerful magical powers and fights for justice. But she’s also a very vulnerable person who feels very lonely most of the time. Since this is an ecchi series, Mio also has some steamy romantic encounters with her seme (male love interest) Rito Yuuki. Mio is a very unique and interesting protagonist that’s easy to love.

Shino Asada

Shino Asada is the main character in the Hamatora series, a shounen action series. He’s an intelligent and very perceptive guy who likes to solve mysteries. But Shino isn’t afraid to use violence to solve a problem, especially when it comes to protecting his family. He’s a very responsible person who tries to make the right decisions, even when it’s the hardest thing to do. Shino is a very relatable and likeable punk-anime character who’s easy to root for.

Yuuto Tatsumi

Yuuto Tatsumi is the main character in the Date-A-Vu series. Though he’s a young boy, he’s also an extremely skilled detective who solves mysteries. He’s a very determined person who won’t stop until he gets what he wants. But Yuuto is also a very sensitive and emotional person who is prone to feeling extremely lonely. Yuuto is a very relatable and human character who you’ll want to protect and support as he goes through his journey in life.

Final Thoughts

Punk-anime characters are a little different from the norm. They aren’t afraid to push boundaries and aren’t afraid to be themselves. With that being said, they also aren’t afraid to put on a wig and become a completely different character for a day. You’re never going to see the same person twice, and that’s something worth celebrating.
