The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has outlined fresh conditions the Nigerian government must take to end its six-month-long academic strike.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, said the government must exhibit transparency to end the ongoing strike.

“Government should tell us and Nigerians – the money that has been alleged to have been approved for revitalisation – how much is it and where is it lodged? When will it be released?” Osodeke said.

Osodeke added that the government must clearly state its position on the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS), a payroll system that ASUU wants as a replacement for the Integrated Payroll and Personnel information system (IPPIS).

“Three, have they accepted the agreement we reached with their panel? They should come and tell us this, and not go to the press,” Osodeke added.

“Strike is a symptom of a problem. Any day you sort out that problem, you will not have strike.”

ASUU has been on strike since February 14, 2022.

Both the FG and ASUU are still beating round the bush for the past six months with no concrete solutions to their impasse. At this point, the interest of the innocent students should be considered, as time wait for nobody. ASUU should be willing to compromise and not always want to have their ways.

Small sense you don't have. We will continue the strike till Nigerian University gets better. You must enjoy a better Nigeria even though, I know you don't like good things.

How will Nigerian universities get better when we don't have good leaders?
If it's what strike can fix, then the strike wouldn't have lasted this long.

Do you have any better solution you can suggest for ASUU? I'm tired of the strike too, but as it's now, it's the only thing to hold onto.

The only solution is to elect good leaders and ASUU have to actively take part in that, if they claim they want to rescue tertiary education in Nigeria.
But when the time comes for elections, Nigerians including the lecturers will put tribalism, religion etc first then start demanding for this and that.
ASUU themselves said this government doesn't value education, so by shutting down the schools they are just imposing hardship on the students and themselves cheesy
If the noise is too much sef, the politicians can travel abroad to cool off, just like Adamu did.

I agree with you 100 percent, but, ASUU can't determine who will be the leaders, it's still Nigerians that will determine that. If Nigeria in their characteristics manner decides to chose the bad ones, can't you see that the cycle will continue.
My point is that ASUU is not even up to 10 percent of Nigerian population and therefore, cannot determine who will rule.

it is quite unfortunate that people go to school but yet they don't know what government owe them , after paying all sorts of taxes and leaving all the mineral resources for the government , yet they still blame the citizens for the failures of the government . My worry is that these same people who don't know what the government owe the citizens will come out seek elective position , and if God decide to purnish his people , he will let these people in .

But ASUU members get appointed by government into various positions! From the Vice president to the SGF, to ministers, NUC ES, JAMB registrar etc.
I believe that if all these people in government who were once staunch ASUU members make a strong case for a better public university education, there won't be need for ASUU strikes anymore. Why is it that once ASUU members get appointed or elected into public offices, they jettison the struggle to reposition our university system

I'm almost certain that even the current ASUU president when elected or appointed into public office would damn the so called patriotic struggle for which he is currently putting the lives millions of Nigerian youths on hold.

As long as we have politicians with missing, fake or elementary certificates earning millions from government we will continue to suffer ASUU strike. Imagine a Rep member with secondary school certificate earning over N50m per month, those university lecturers will always compare themselves and feel cheated.

Final solution, pay politicians using civil service structure.
