I am still very proud of our people for their stand on that issue. The way this man jumped everyone to become a cardinal is a confirmation that nepotism is everywhere. That Arinze of a guy is something else, very short sighted and nepotistic.

Wow, nepotism as in he hail from the same village as pope Francis?

The Catholic church is not your village council. The pope is infallible! There are many diocese with non indigenous bishops and nobody complains. If your people ain't happy with the pope then they had better leave the church instead of making noise. Nobody drags ezemon title with indigenes na.

Rubbish. We don't buy that. Pope is fallible in today's world.

Shut up you liar!

Wetin concern cardinal Arinze with Bishop appointment? Is he the Pope? There is CBCN , there is Papal Nuncio. They are the ones that have official Pope correspondence with the church activities in Nigeria

The same Mbaise priests fought against themselves among the nominees by the late Bishop. They refused to settle or give up for one among them. Then pope appointed Okpaleke according to the recommendation of the Catholic bishops conference of Nigeria.

Then BC Okpaleke is from Anambra, you bigots of Mbaise now assume cardinal Arinze influenced his nomination. Cardinal Arinze has nothing to do with the nomination but CBCN

Most of the Bishops that came from Awka Diocese were never from Awka Diocese.

Archbishop Obiefuna was the first Awka Bishop but from Onitsha, he eventually became Arch Bishop of Onitsha and died there.

Cardinal Okpaleke became Monsignor in Awka Diocese but he is not from Awka Diocese

This beef is unnecessary...

The Cardinal wields a powerful influence from Rome...

I dont know what the creator or poster of this thread was hoping to achieve...

I suspect someone is trying to stoke disaffection among Igbos especially now that we have a bigger fish to fry...

That one is urban legend. Late Arinze didn't leave the new of any potential replacement for himself. He is not allowed to do that.

A bishop cannot point his successor. It is the sole prerogative of the Pope. Where did the late bishop derive his power from?

You are right, any society based on nepotism will fail. Mbaise has made it clear that if our Biafra will be based on nepotism, they will fight it to the end. Ask yourself why Awka Anambra with far fewer priest has so many bishops while mbaise with three time more priest has none?

Here, one answer to your question by one of the posters on this thread:

That's how they think. They were given 5 yrs to bring one person from their midst as Bishops, they kept on doing Mbaise local politics, Pope Benedict XVI, who we all know have great trust and respect for Cardinal Arinze, asked him to just recommend a priest from Nigeria, that Mbaise faithfuls cannot continue to stay without a Bishop. Arinze recommended Okpaleke, whom he knows is capable and has clean record . That was how Peter Okpaleke became a Bishop.

The Bishopric is not by election or popular consent. It is an appointment that follows a lot of process. Clearly, this excuse is what the mbasise people used to justify the hijacking of this office. Cardinal Arinze is not the Papal Nuncio and at the time of the appointment, was not an official at the Vatican. He does not belong to the Owerri Ecclesiastical Province and had no say in the appointment of the Bishop. A Bishop was given to the Ahiara people after the priests sabotaged themselves when any of the them was considered.

The mass should have been held at Mbaise. They need to see him in his full gloryy.. Mbaise, the only people who have rejected an ordained bishop even against the popes decree, simply because he is not an Mbaise man. Very very cantankerous things..

The wickedness of Mbaise people is well known and documented. I heard that if your car breaks down at night when travelling through Mbaise, you are a dead man.

Stop trying to defend the indefensible. What mbaise people did was very very bad, admit it. I'm from Orlu diocese and I don't even know who our bishop is, whether he's from the North we don't care as long as he's doing his duty to the body of Christ

It is right to stand for justice and equity at all times...

It is not only in Mbaise but deeply entrenched in Igbo consciousness to repudiate unfairness and arbitrariness...

Cardinal Francis Arinze was viewed as creating a growth pathway exclusively only his Anambra proteges in the Catholic priesthood....

The examples were rife.

I stood with Mbaise people on their protest and I am still supporting their action.

It has nothing to do with the elevation of Bishop Okpaleke to the position of a cardinal....We can put two and two together...

Society can only get better when people choose to demand that the right things be done....

Cardinal Arinze is not your problem, your stubborn nepotic clergy are. He had no role to play in the Cardinal's elevation. Pope Francis had a special love for him when he accepted his resignation. He thanked him for his "holy patience." Obviously the patience paid off.

Apologized and done penance? Mbaise people apologized from their heart of hearts!? You don't know them!
There was nothing that was not done then to make them calm down, but they adamantly refused. Even the then Imo State governor stepped in! Everybody begged them to allow the man be . They stuck to their guns! They did not just refuse, they refused vehemently and violently. So much so that the police were arresting Mbaise born Catholic priests who went on rampage destroying stuffs. The whole episode was frustratingly shameful..
They haven't repented anything.. It's just that the Pope caved in for the sake of Peace. Bring back the Cardinal ti Mbaise today, and they will start to riot all over again.. Mbaise, Ngwa, Ikwerre... They're all like that..
