We can be a developed country, but no be beans. It will take sincerity on the part of leadership, it will take unity of the Nigerian people (not our celebrated tribal differences), it will take having a sense of pride about our identity, which many Nigerians have lost, it will take revolutionary policies, it will take so so much. Where is China heading today? Where is Singapore? It might take 50 years, 100 years, maybe never, but it all depends on our resolve and vision which everyone must buy into.

@Sleek,
Verry well said. Sometimes, it's criminal to expect prayer and God to solve all our problems without us taking responsibility on d required steps necessary for d attainment of our individual and collective goals.
It's like a man who wants to store water in a bucket and because he finds it a bit difficult to get d but decided decided he could make do with basket using adhesive tape all around d basket hoping and praying that God will help him prevent d leakages.
Our lack of sinceritya is unparallel. We as pple complain and cry fowl when we or someone close to us are not in charge, d moment we are put in charge we do worst things.
Just imagine d revelations on how public institutions were looted under d guise of privatisation!.
We are a nation being led by looters rather than leaders. While most politician are there for self instead of service,D same Nigerians masses will continue to allow d politicians to use tribal and religious sentiments to divide us.
I remember as a southerner I pleaded with my brothers and sisters to vote for Buhari because I could not see how Jonathan's govt could be radically diferent from his godfather's (Obasanjo).
The responses were "why should we allow another Aboki to continue to rule us". Others said "He is an Islamic fundamentalist only trying to use our dear pastor Bakare to cover up".
Instead of talking about competency and ability to deliver. D reality is getting to us that poverty and sufferings have no religious and tribal borders.
With d new minimum wage being implemented, Nigerians should brace up for fuel increase to N100 per. Litre!
D politicians are not prepared to sacrifice anything rather they will pass d burden to already over-burden masses!
I am only afraid for. My children at d rate things are going except we do something decisive nothing will change no matter how many mosques or churches we build every week while our minds and hearts are full of evils and self-center ways of dealing with one another
As my passing short pls let us all "Be d change we desire to see"

Nigeria will never be a developed country as far as I am concerned so far we still have this forced and un-favourable polity but if the 3 regions can go their separate ways or attempt a loose confederacy then there will be the development because tribalism will always chew up the possibility of development. #GBAM

Nigeria MAY someday be a developed country under three conditions:

1) When the majority of Nigerians are ready to CHANGE our/their corrupt ways; When we quit being satisfied with mediocrity.

2) When every single form of leader (in politics) don kpeme--and they've stopped reproducing as well. grin Coz, it's like when anyone joins politics, the "embezzlement and corruption gene" automatically joins their chromosome.

3) When they've all died, and A new, fresh, Non- Nigerian, BENEVOLENT DICTATOR is assigned/elected as President. (

How all these conditions possible will be met in the next thousand years still baffles me. We'll wait and see.

omo_to_dun:

As long as Nigerians still believe that only God can fix their problems, then that country will never be developed. Take a look at this quote from a previous poster: that, plus all the points that BABE brought up, sums up our problems quite well.
And like BABE, I am baffled as to how our psyche will change. If one thing is consistent with Nigerians, it is that there is no amount of suffering or hardship or adversary that can kill our spirit. You cannot push a Nigerian to the proverbial wall. Once he hits the wall, he will find a hammer, break the wall down, and taunt you.

lol at the bolded part.

Hav u ever see a country comprises of over 200 ethnic group wit diffrent idiology developed? Also u ve see a country progressive without revolution?D point is dat, until we allow disintegration/confederalism as wel as complet mental&physical revolution,Nigeria may never develop.
Re: Do You Think Nigeria Will Ever Be A Developed Country: ? by kaboninc(m): 8:55am On Aug 19, 2011
I strongly believe that we'll someday develop and by God's grace in my time. One thing I consider our greatest problem is ILLITERACY. If people can learn how to read and write effectively, that'll be a giant step towards greatest. Next is information and knowledge. If we're informed and knowledgeable or try to be, then we'll analyse issues objectively without prejudice nor sentiments. Like president Goodluck said, a knowledge based economy is what we need.

Yes Nigeria will certainly be a developed country someday but all hands must be on desk,
The problem is not just our corrupt leaders as we claim. What about the petrol sellers that use fake meters and stuffs to make lots of profits? What about the market women that wants to extort as much money as possible We all are guilty, one way or the other,

We will develop when we do away with ethnic sentiments. During the last election most people cast their vote based on tribe and ethnicity and I dont see this changing anytime soon.

Nigerians are very enterprising people. We have all we need to be the envy of all nations, both human and natural, what then is stopping us? You are I know the truth. Let me give just few instances. Why have we not dredged River Niger for over 30 years now? Simply because they know the South East will develop massively by itself. What about the Aba Shoe makers. All they need is just little government support and I can bet my life they will produce better shoes than what we import from Italy and the rest. To be honest, our leaders know what to do, but most times they are reluctant to do the right thing simply bc the project is not in their state or region,

I have heard many Nigerians, especially our brothers from South South Nigeria say they will never allow an Igbo man to rule Nigeria, even if he is the Messiah? Then why are we complaining about poverty? Let us continue to allow the same group of vision-less rogues rule us, no one should complain. If you complain thunder will strike you. As for me, i do not care whether we have good government or bad government. Just make as much money as you can and help your family and community.

Maybe in 50 years or next century corruption & religion in my opinion are the biggest things. Once corruption is actually punished, and we get people to stop blindly following religion the rest will come eventually.

Nigeria will only develop when we start demanding more from our leaders, split into different groups and eliminate the religious wackos.

In the current capitalist system it is impossible for Nigeria to ever become first world.

I want to open everyones eyes to the hidden truth about our position in the global economy:

The international economy is based on capitalist principles, and the world is a macrocosm of what occurs in a capitalist nation. Capitalism is like a pyramid, the only way it can work is if the base is larger than the top. The people at the base are the lower class who do the grunt work, they are the factory workers, seamstresses etc, they do physically demanding jobs that dont require much education or skills. The middle class is the management, while the top of the pyramid is the elites, investment bankers, stock brokers and CEO's, who use the work of the poorer classes to create products to sell back to them for profit.
Inevitably the divide between the richer and poorer gets wider (this is a proven fact)

This same principle applies to nations, the bottom of the Pyramid is Africa and the 3rd world countries, who mindlessly export raw materials. Economic policy that does not require much thought or education, and is physically demanding on the environment. While the top is japan, America and Europe, who use those raw materials to create products to sell back to Africa for a profit. At the end of the day there is a net loss for Africa, and gain for the north. Slowly the divide between the wealthy nations and the 3rd world widens.

in 1980 Africa was at 10% below the poverty line now it is at 80 %.

In this capitalist system the continued wealth of  Europe and America depends on the continued poverty of the rest of humanity, because the base must be bigger than the top. The emergance of China to to top of the pyramid means even more problems for Africa, because the base must widen. Expect to see starvation in Nigeria 20 years from now.
Do you guys think i would go on an American forum and try to convince them that they should turn socialist? Never, because they actually benefit from capitalism. But to hear Africans supporting capitalism is like hearing a poor hungry sweatshop worker payed 2$ an hour, praising the unregulated capitalist economy of the united states in the late 19 century.

What Africa needs to realize that it is not possible for every country to develop. Because if every nation was 1st world there would be no base on the capitalist pyramid for them to stand on. We also need to realize that first world life is not normal it is a an unsustainable strain on the enviornment. Instead of striving for a life style that is only possible on the backs of starving children we should look for a financial  equilibrium.
