Your Roles In Promoting Good Governance - AFRICMIL Sensitizes Kwara Community


The residents of Bodesadu Community in Moro Local Government Area of Kwara State on Friday sensitized on the importance of asking government officials valid questions as part of ways to promote good governance.

The call was made during the media advocacy campaign on whistleblowing organized by African Centre for Media and Information Literacy AFRICMIL supported by the John D and CATHERINE T MacArthur Foundation.

Addressing the participants at the Nigeria Union of Teachers secretariat at Bodesadu in Kwara North, a resource person Abdulrahman Ayuba, who is also a Cheif Executive Officer, Center for Community Empowerment and poverty Eradication, CCEPE, charged the community to come alive in being surveillants of any form corruption they come across.

“It is part of your rights and responsibilities to always ask valid questions when capital projects like boreholes water, road, health centre are brought to your community in order to decode if there is corruption so as to ensure effective transparency and better living of the residents.

“You have to be more proactive and sensitive to monitoring news around you, as to be able to serve as deliberate lookouts for any devisive act or corruption which can necessitate a poor economy and affect the total wellbeing of youand others in your community”

Earlier in his Welcome Address the Coordinator, African Center for Media and Information Literacy, AFRICMIL, Chido Onumah represented by the program manager, Mr Kolawole Ogunbiyi urged the participants to always speak out in the face of anything that could potentially harm or endanger their environments.

Chido added that AFRICMIL will work in collaboration with community-based organisations to encourage the people at the grassroots to adopt the culture of blowing the whistle.

Speaking on behalf of the community Chief Imam Bodesadu community, Alhaji Ibrahim Nuhu Baba lauded the advocacy campaign said it will encourage people to move from their low state of devastation to a better state of living.

“Our community will become revamp when we learnt how to speak out on wrongdoings without fear of intimidation”

Also speaking, the representative of the Police Relationship Committee, Alhaji Dauda Ibrahim, noted that the whistleblowing training will assist in solving the issues of insecurity in the society.

He, however, solicited the support of government and nongovernmental organizations to assist the community in the areas of poor supply of electricity.
