I was having a discussion with a friend and the argument was that, Court wedding in Nigeria doesn't amount to property sharing in the cases of divorce.

While I haven't seen or heard of any cases where properties is shared between divorced couples who originally married in Court, I want to ask Nairalanders if that's a case in Nigeria?

alimony is alien to our jurisprudence. At best, the court may order the man to remit a sum for the children upkeep.
However properties jointly owned (where the parties contributed to acquire it) is a different ball game
So if you as a woman is hoping that upon
annulment of your union, the court would ask the man to give you part of his properties, you're on a long thing.
Why such practice is adopted in the western world is the belief, that if a party has been exposed to a certain lifestyle, it would be inequitable for he or her to return to their old position. and so, the law expects you to maintain your ex partner, as if he or she were never divorced.
Note it applies to both the men and women. A clear cut example is that of Adele

The Western court system favours women 97% of the time, only 3% of Alimony is paid to man (I'm guessing you this already), so can we really say it applies to both men and women? undecided...

Like i said, the premise for their belief or argument is that it would be inequitable to return your spouse to their old position after been exposed to a life of affluence/wealth. The ultimate question becomes in most marriages who is usually the wealthy party? But yeah, the legal system place precedence on the women over the men.
And right now, that policy/belief is deterring so many from marriages. because if things go south, you are likely to lose everything to a woman to did not even bring so much as a pin
