Catastrophic Plateau Utd Implode As Rivers United Reach Confed Cup Group Stage

Nigerian representatives in the continent suffered contrasting fortunes yesterday in far away Libya as Plateau United failed to progress in the Confederation Cup after imploding against Al Akhdar but Rivers United fought gallantly to move on in the competition after playing out a 1-1 draw against Al Nasr.

It was a disastrous outing for Plateau United who despite their 4-1 lead secured in the first leg of the Confederation playoff, suffered a crushing 3-0 loss at the Benina Martyrs Stadium to exit the competition on the away goal rule.

Plateau United managed to play 0-0 at halftime but capitulated in the second half when they conceded three goals after wasting numerous chances in the first 45 minutes.

The Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu led side eventually paid dearly for their profligacy as they conceded the first two goals in the 62nd and 87th minute and with five minutes left to play, the ‘Tin City’ boys failed to hold their nerves thereby conceding the back-breaking goal in the fourth minute of added time.

By their woeful performance in Benghazi, the 2017 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions have now failed to reach the group stage of the Confederation Cup after their demotion from the Champions League.

It will be recalled that Plateau United had dropped to the lower league after they failed to overcome Esperance hurdle in the Champions League.

Meanwhile, it was not all gloom for Nigerian football as NPFL defending champions, Rivers United, forced host Al Nasr to a 1-1 draw to qualify for the group stage.

Although the hosts drew the first blood when Abdulsalam Al Fitouri put them in front in the 39th minute, former Kano Pillars man, Nyima Nwagua, restored parity for Rivers United in the 57th minute for the ‘Pride of Rivers’ to progress 6-1 on aggregate.

Going by yesterday’s outing by the NPFL clubs, Rivers United are the remaining Nigerian club in the continent.

No Nigerian club has won the Confederation Cup title since it was introduced by CAF.

2022 CAF WCL: Hosts ASFAR Pip Bayelsa Queens To Qualify For Final

November 9, 2022 11:18 pm

Hosts of this year’s CAF women’s Champions League ASFAR of Morocco, have qualified for the final after edging Nigeria’s Bayelsa Queens 1-0 on Wednesday, Completesports.com reports.

The only goal of the game was scored by Ibtissam Jraïdi whose 27th minute strike was enough to earn her side the hard fought win.

Bayelsa Queens have now lost their second game of the tournament after losing 2-1 Mamelodi Sundowns in their Group B opener.

The win means ASFAR will take on defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns in the final on Sunday.

While Bayelsa Queens will take on Simba Queens of Tanzania in Saturday’s third place match.

In the first semi-final also played on Wednesday Mamelodi Sundowns overcame Simba Queens 1-0 courtesy Boitumelo Rabele’s 76th minute effort.

What's the boss cooking? WC Series or Super Falcons or Local league? smiley

Good morning naptu2

Still wrapping my head why our league doesn't get empathy and support from most of us. Well done.

I only watched the final 10mins of the Bayelsa Queens match, those ladies did their best, it just wasn't their day. Their opponent's goalkeeper should be praised for her resilience and smart saves.

On the other hand, Plateau Utd had lots of chances to put the tie to bed, but they kept wasting them, hence, this is how far they deserve to go

Our league is rubbish.
We perform woefully at continental competitions.
And these are the players some people wants called to play for super Eagles?
They make examples of Egypt, Tunisia ans SouthAfrica who uses alot of home based players, but these countries have good leagues and are always at the deep end of African Club Competitions.
Some people mention Enyeama was home based when he started playing for super Eagles but they forgot that Eyimba won back to back champions league when Enyeama was playing for them.

NFF needs to wake up

Later on some people will open their smelly mouth to complain we don't like using homebase players, when they can't even compete with countries that are not supposed to be any match for us cheesy

The Europeans have abolished away goal rule, don't know why CAF has refused to follow suit, that said, Nigerian clubs handlers should learn the antics and politics of African football from Orji Uzor kalu's Enyimba of 2005, else they would never win anything on African club level. The north africans are masters at it, they never loose on there soil

Bayelsa Queens did not crash out Oga headline builder..
They made it through group stage to semi-final and lost at the semi's. They will be playing Simba Queens for a 3rd place.

Bayelsa Queens did not crash out and therefore they have a chance to win the competition. That is, they have made progress instead of crashing out.

naptu2, what do you expect from our teams when they are match Rusty? - Defeats,of course!

Whereas other African countries have their league running, ours is in limbo. How do we compete with other countries??

Countries with virile league always churn out good results. But not with us.

Angola Agusto Primero lost to Future FC of Egypt 1-0 at home last week. But went to Egypt to beat them and qualify for the group stages. It's an example of virile league running in their country.

Kara FC of Togo played goalless draw with Sfaxien FC of Tunisia at home. But went to Tunis,at reverse fixture, to beat them 1-0 and qualify. Evidence of virile domestic league.

Until NFF come with a program of virile and competitive league, not abridged league, our teams shall continue to wobble on the continent as we are witnessing today.

Happy new month bro.

How will any Nigerian club win the competition when we are not technical not tactical enough. Our coaches are old school, and since we love doing things the same way, expecting different results, we won't move forward in Nigeria.
