The Harvard University Fellowship Programme is open to offer the Visiting Fellowship programme funding to candidates at all stages of their careers to pursue projects that may necessitate in-depth research on the library’s holdings, as well as opportunities to draw on staff expertise and participate in intellectual life at Harvard.

Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health traces its roots to public health activism at the beginning of the last century, a time of a dynamic social refinement. The beginning saw that faculties were made to commit themselves to research as well as teaching. In 1946, HSPH became an independent, degree-granting body and is no longer affiliated with the medical school. Today, the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health brings together dedicated experts from many disciplines to educate new generations of global health leaders and produce powerful ideas that improve the lives and health of people.

The recent research topics respective candidates have worked on speak to the breadth and depth of Houghton’s holdings—ranging from colonial-era Native American music to the collecting of Sanskrit manuscripts, and Iberian chivalric romances to celebrity pregnancy on the London stage.

The scholarship opportunity provides fellows with access to other libraries at Harvard University, and opportunities to exchange knowledge and promote their research through its publications, scholarship opportunities, and public programs.

Harvard University will award fellows in the 2023–2024 cohort stipends worth about $4,500 during the tenure of their appointment.

The following/given criteria must be fulfilled by candidates to be eligible or to qualify for the Harvard University Fellowship Programme.

Eligible Countries: International Candidates are eligible to apply for the scholarship programme.

Opportunity Focus Areas: The merit-based scholarship is open for full-time undergraduate courses

Required Language: English

The scholarship opportunity is open to candidates of all nationalities. Non-U.S. citizens awarded a fellowship will be required to obtain a J-1 visa. Harvard University can sponsor the visa, but fellows will be responsible for payment of associated fees and will receive their stipend 2-3 weeks after arriving at Houghton Library.
Applications from Doctoral students, post-doctoral, academics, and independent scholars, as well as curators, and other libraries, archive, and museum professionals, will be accepted.
Fellowships may not be granted to scholars who live within commuting distance of the library.
Scholars are welcome to apply each year. Candidates who were awarded a fellowship, however, must wait for a period of 5 years before another fellowship may be awarded.
They particularly welcome applications from students and scholars from underrepresented groups in academia, including women, Black, Indigenous, and other people of color, first-generation scholars, and persons with disabilities.

Applicants are strongly advised to save applications in progress; not to submit applications until it is complete. The deadline for application submission is Friday, January 20, 2023.

Note: Other than the Pantzer Fellowship, applicants need not apply for specific fellowships, as the Selection Committee determines which fellowship is best suited to specific research if awarded a fellowship.
