Congratulations on Your Graduation…What’s next?

How to Apply for UK Post-Study Visa: So you have completed your study program in the UK and obtained your degree. What is next? You may want to return to your home country especially if you have got a job waiting for you back home.

Should you decide to stay back the UK has made a provision for a Graduate Visa (GV). The GV grants you permission to stay in the UK for 2 years after the successful completion of your course in the UK.

To apply for the UK Graduate Visa, you have to meet these conditions:

You have to be on a valid Student Visa or Tier 4 (General Student Visa)
You have to be physically present in the UK
You studied and Completed a UK bachelor’s degree, postgraduate degree or other courses that are eligible for a minimum period of time with your study visa or Tier 4 (General Student Visa)
The institution you attended has informed the Home Office that you have successfully completed your course.
*When in doubt make sure to confirm from your institution if they have informed the Home Office of your successful completion of your course*
For Bachelors and Master’s Degree courses. The UK Graduate Visa is granted and valid for 2 years only. For PhD and other Doctoral qualifications, the Graduate Visa will be valid for 3 years. The GV validity starts from the day of its approval. You can decide to have your GV extended after it expires. You should also check to see if you are eligible for other type of visas. You may want to check if you can switch to the Skilled Worker Visa.

It could take as much as 8 weeks before you get a decision from the UK Home Office on your application. As long as you followed the online application process, proved your identity and submitted the right documents you should get a decision within 2 months. You can stay in the UK while you wait for the decision to be made on your GV application.

There are several things you can do with a UK Graduate Visa.

You can search for work
You can start your own business
You can work in most jobs
You can do voluntary work
You can travel abroad and return to the UK
You can continue living in the UK with your spouse and children if they are eligible
You cannot work as professional sportsperson
You do not have recourse to public funds
* You can only study with a Graduate Visa if your course is not eligible for a student visa. Mostly course that are not more than 6 months in length*

to apply and be granted a Graduate Visa you need to have successfully completed the degree course you were granted a Student visa or Tier 4 (General) student visa for. Your eligibility to apply also depends on:

The type of course you studied
How long you studied in the UK for
The institution you attended, for example your university or college
If for some reason you changed your course and you were not required to apply for a new student visa then you only need complete the course that you changed to.

The institution you attended must be a licensed sponsor and it must be complaint with a good record.

To apply you need to have a UK bachelor’s degree, a UK master’s degree, a UK PhD. You can also apply if you completed any of the following;

a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE)
a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)
a foundation program in Medicine or Dentistry

the Legal Practice Course in England and Wales, the Solicitors Course in Northern Ireland, or a Diploma in Professional Legal Practice in Scotland
a law conversion course approved by the Solicitors Regulation Authority
You will need to pay the sum of £715 for application. Another fee to pay is the healthcare surcharge. The Healthcare surcharge is £624 for each year that you are in the UK. For 2 years it will cost £1,248. For 3 years it will cost £1,872. Should you get a job in the public healthcare sector after you have remitted the healthcare surcharge, you may be able to get a refund.

You will need the following documents to apply for a Graduate Visa:

a valid passport
your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS statement) with your reference number on it
your biometric residence permit (BRP), if you were handed on when you applied for your study visa
proof of relationship with your spouse or children if applicable
a letter from your scholarship or sponsorship provider giving approval on your application
You must make your UK Graduate Visa online. You must apply while your Student visa or Tier 4 General student visa is still valid. You will also need to prove your identity with other supporting documents.

If your spouse and children are with you in the United Kingdom as ‘dependants’ on your Tier 4 (General) student visa, they can apply to continue to stay as your dependants on your Graduate Visa. Should you give birth to a child while you are on the Tier (General) student visa, you can apply for that child. If successful be aware their visa will expire same day as yours.

A dependant spouse or child is any of these:

your husband, wife, civil partner or unmarried partner
your child under age 18
your child over age 18
If your child is under 18 years of age, he or she does not need to have been a dependant if both of the following is true:

if he or she was born in the UK while you were on the current student visa or Tier 4 (General) student visa
if he or she were born in the UK
If your child is over 18 years of age he or she must:

have been a dependant on your student visa
live with you
must not be married, in a civil partnership or have any children
be financially supported by you
However, if your child lives with you, you will have to show evidence of their address such as:

a bank statement
driving license

a letter from their university or college
It is important to note that you will have to show proof that he or she is your child. You can use a UK birth certificate or a special guardianship order from a court of law.
