Sleep paralysis happens when your brain is awake however your neuromuscular junctions are not firing impulses.

It's very easy to understand; the nerve cells of the nervous system transmit electric impulses in split seconds to muscles of the body. They do this with the help of neurotransmitters e.g acetylcholine, dopamine and GABA.
Neurotransmitters bind to specialized receptors on the membranes of muscles and nerve cells, the bindings triggers a cascade of biochemical reactions within the cells that triggers either an inhibitory or excitatory response.

Neurotransmitters are like the language with which the Brain communicates with muscles via nerve cells. The brain will fire the impulses, it will go through chains of nerve cells via neurotransmission until this transmission gets to the first target muscle cell. The connection between the last never cell and the first muscle cell is called the neuromuscular junction.

If the Brain is firing and there is no communication between the last nerve cell and the first muscle cell at the neuromuscular junction, sleep paralysis will happen because the muscle is not getting signals from the brain to move. Acetylcholine is usually the neurotransmitter responsible for this signal.

Recall that Nigerians at one point considered Sickle-cell anemia patients "Abikus" who came to torment their existence. Thankfully we now know better and we no longer demonize those poor helpless individuals who are nothing but victims of our poor choices and lifestyles.

We don't have sleep centers in this part of that world. A regular hospital can handle that. What if I shock you that some people still believe sickle cell is spiritual?
