Why Onion Price Increases Every December ?

A bag of red onion is N60,000 while a bag of yellow onion is N120,000
Last year December was N85,000

I already predicted that this year will be high
it almost double the price of last year. Onion price are highly predictable considering the planting system.

You can either buy onion in the season when its less to sell or
The alternative is planting a little even if it's only for your family consumption

Remember I told you there is a whole lot of money in farm produce storage business
What you needed is understanding how the specific system work.
And who else would you be learning from if not the farmer itself

Currently the 100kg bag of onion that sold in January this year for less than N15,000 is selling in the market at N120,000
Thats about 2000% increase

WHY
* Onion is majorly planted in Sokoto, kebbi, Kaduna etc.
* The onions are planted at the same time of the year
* The onions will all be ready for harvest at the same time
* There will be plenty onion in the Market at the same time
* This lead to onion surplus
* The price then fall to reduce the quantity that go to waste
Farmers virtually beg for people to buy onion at whatever price

REASON
There is no modern storage facility for onion
Some farmers who can afford and some of the business people create some local storage system made from bamboo and thatched. These they use in preserving some of the onions for months
Its the quantity preserved that we get to buy later in the year. By which time there is small quantity of onion and the demand increases most especially by the festive season

By the next harvesting season again, the cycle is repeated with surplus onion looking for buyers in the market
