All Africa Games- Maputo 2011. Updates Here by olapluto(m): 10:22pm On Sep 04, 2011 |
While the world has been focusing on Daegu for World Athletics Champs, a bigger sports event is taking place in Africa. It is the African Olympics. The games officially kicked off yesterday in Maputo, and so far, South Africa has won 4 medals at least. Nigeria should normally hit the medals table soonest even though our stronger sports were 'omitted' by the organizers. Anyone with news or updates can post it here. I can confirm that Nigerian Female volleyball team has qualified for the semi final and one win from a sure medal. The male counterpart lost to Kenya in their opening match and have recovered with a win in their 2nd game. Nigeria's high medal hopes are in the Female sprints, Relay, Table tennis (Toriola/Merotoun still going strong), we have a few promising Boxers even though female boxing isnt allowed yet. BTW A promising female boxing talent to watch out for is Kehinde Obareh in the 60kg category. A very lovely lady who isnt being fully supported by Nigerian govt. |

Swimming starts today. South Africa looking to match their record of being top in Africa with 25 gold last time out in Algiers 2007. They have not come with the strongest swimmers but I do not see them missing out on top spot here. Nigeria will be 'intruding' with any medal. |

Nigerian men OUT of the volleyball championship after losing to Algeria 3-0. Kenya however continues her dominance of the sports beating Nigerian women 3-1. Both had already qualified for semi finals coming up tomorrow. Nigerian women face their Algerian counterpart in one of the semi finals tomorrow and a win will guarantee Nigeria at least a silver medal. Nigerian men however will play the host Mozambique for placing. |
