Difference between Maiko and Geiko:

If you are interested in Japan, perhaps you have heard of maiko or Geisha. Maybe you may be familiar with the term "geisha".
Many people from other countries wonder how they are different. Are they all the same?

Difference in Definition:
Maiko is the name given to apprentices during the period of training to become a geiko.
Geiko is a woman who has apprenticed and trained as a maiko for 5 to 6 years immediately after graduating from junior high school.

Difference in age:

Maiko are quite young, ranging in age from 15 to 20 years old. Geiko, on the other hand, are older than 20 years old. They can continue to work even if they are over 50 or 60.

For maiko, serving drinks and talking to customers are important jobs, but for geiko, the main focus is to perform their art.

Differences in Appearance:
A maiko's hair is tied with natural hair and decorated with seasonal flower “kanzashi.”
Once the hair is tied, the head is not washed for a week because of the time and money required to do it.

Geiko wear a wig called a "shimada.” They do not wear any ornaments in their hair.

Differences in Salaries and Other Finances:
Maiko are not paid for their work, as they are still in training.
Instead of wages, all living expenses (including costumes and training) are covered by the Okiya. Geiko are only paid for their attendance at banquets, and the amount a guest pays for one geisha at one banquet is about 50,000 yen. However, since an intermediary fee is deducted, the actual amount of money a geisha can obtain at one time is about 10,000 yen. Many people are interested in how much a geisha earns. How much do geisha make in a month? A geisha's monthly salary is generally between 200,000 and 300,000 yen per month. In addition, they receive tips (from customers, which can exceed their salary if they are a popular geisha.

As a geisha, you will have to pay for your own kimono, hairdressing, makeup, and training, so your expenses will be high.
