Outrage As Nigerian University Fixes Exam To Hold A Day To 2023 General Election, Shutting Out Millions Of Students Eligible To Vote

Some students at the Federal University of Technology Minna (FUTH) in Niger State have requested that their second-semester examination schedule for the 2020/2021 academic session be rescheduled so that they can travel to their respective states for the 2023 general election.

FUT MINNA is a public university of about 20,000 students, offering Bachelor of Technology and Master of Technology in various technology-inclined fields.

General elections will be held in Nigeria on 25 February 2023 to elect the President and Vice President and members of the Senate and House of Representatives.

SaharaReporters learnt that the management of the school fixed some examinations, such as CHE 228, CIE 221, MCE 321, ABE 526, to hold a day before the general election and some courses for Monday, February 27, 2023 (two days after the poll).

A student who spoke to SaharaReporters on condition of anonymity lamented that with the arrangement, he will have no time to travel to his state to vote.

The management did not put into consideration many students who are not from Niger State. How will they fix examinations a day before and two days after the general election? I can say this is a clear way to deny some of us (students) the chance to vote during the election. And we all know how this election is critical to Nigeria,” he said.

Solomon Dominion, another student of the school, said, “Today my school Federal University of Technology Minna (FUTMINNA) released our exam timetable and we're to start exams on 20th February making it impossible to go back home and vote. Please Twitter family can you make this go viral. So, it can be readjusted.”

“There are over 10 thousand people who are ready to go back home and vote, please we don't want to be disenfranchised,” he added.

Reacting to the situation, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, on Thursday tweeted, “Let 3.5 million Nigerian students vote in the 2023 general election, the @MBuhari regime kept them home 9 months already! #WeCantContinueLikeThis #Letourpeoplevote #SoworeMagashi2023.”

Also, a Nigerian singer, who rose to fame as a member of P-Square, Paul Okoye, also known as Rudeboy tackled the country’s electoral body, Independent National Electoral Commission for not taking a proactive measure to ensure a high percentage of Nigerian youths, including university students would not be disenfranchised during the 2023 poll.

“Out of the 74million youths eligible voters, 26million of them are students and they are all back in school, most of them registered during the ASUU strike.. it's 10days remaining for collection@inecnigeriawhy are students still in school by now?” the popular singer said.

"There are over 10 thousand people who are ready to go back home and vote, please we don't want to be disenfranchised. The SUG of the is on their side hence we can't rely on the SUG. Please my Obidient fellow's make this go viral so that our labour won't be in vain🥺🤲"

We can't really say, the school management may be members of the evil political party that have been terrorizing Nigerians. They clearly know that youths and students are not on their side.

I wonder why Agbadorians want people disenfrachanced. What are guys afraid of? I think your party is the best thing after sliced bread grin

Why are some people bent on politicizing every situation?
Every slight decision that inconvenient everyone is solely against them.

This is not the first time we will be holding general election during tertiary institutions academic year so every student voters should find a way around it.

Even lecturers and School managements who should be literate and knowledgeable enough to encourage youths to go all out to vote are now the ones trying to disenfranchise us. It's a known fact that we are even fighting for them and the future of their children, too bad angry

Alfa Sodiq Aufbauh, what your point exactly? Why do you wish Nigerians students to be systematically disenfranchised? Don't you think they would vote for your emilokan?

Omo!..dis fools never disappoints.

Their eyes don finally clear say nothing for them from Nigerian youths, from North to South... Nothing!!!

Mark my words, even if Tinubu magically wins by mistake, Buhari will nullify the election based on irregularities.

February 25th no too far again, let's see how ACN will win.

See why they said you don't put the cart in front of the horse? None of the candidates brought this issue up before election year, not in 2020, not in 2021, not in 2022 but a month before election, you want to voice out concerns? No be juju be that? While some are shouting collect PVC and then slandering one another through social media, they forgot the many obstacles that could prevent people from actually voting.

You want a better Nigeria but your candidate cannot even identify the major problems.....Make una dey play, Obidient this, Atikulated that, Battified lo kan, NONE can save Nigeria.....NONE!

This is just wrong!...

Apart from easily disenfranchising a lot of the students, it also puts their lives at risk due to violence that may result from elections.

They know very well that the only way they can rig successfully is if we don't vote. Once we vote, that'll amount to overvoting and the bad votes would be screened out.

FUTMX is always like that.
2015 we had a lecture on the presidential election day. The Man even took attendance, 9:00-11:00am.
So irresponsible.
