Malaria is a deadly disease that claims the lives of over 400,000 people every year. While there is a lot of information available about the disease, there are still many things that people don't know about malaria. In this article, we will be discussing some of the lesser-known facts about malaria, its causes, symptoms, and treatments.

Malaria is caused by a parasite
Contrary to popular belief, malaria is not caused by a virus or bacteria. It is caused by a single-celled parasite called Plasmodium, which is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito.

Malaria is preventable
While there is no vaccine for malaria, the disease is preventable. The most effective way to prevent malaria is by using insecticide-treated bed nets, wearing long-sleeved clothing, and applying mosquito repellent. Additionally, taking antimalarial medication before and during your trip to a malaria-endemic area can also help prevent the disease.

Malaria can be asymptomatic
Not everyone who is infected with malaria will display symptoms. Some people may be asymptomatic carriers, meaning they are infected with the parasite but do not show any signs of the disease. This can make malaria difficult to control and eradicate as asymptomatic carriers can continue to spread the disease unknowingly.

Malaria can be fatal
Malaria can be a fatal disease if left untreated. The severity of the disease can vary, with some people experiencing mild symptoms and others developing severe complications that can lead to organ failure and death.

Malaria is a global problem
Malaria is not just a problem in Africa, as many people believe. The disease is prevalent in over 100 countries, with over half of the world's population at risk of infection.

Malaria disproportionately affects children
Children under the age of five are the most vulnerable to malaria. In 2019, 67% of all malaria deaths occurred in children under the age of five.

There are different types of malaria
There are four different types of malaria: Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium malariae, and Plasmodium ovale. Of these, Plasmodium falciparum is the most deadly and responsible for the majority of malaria-related deaths.

Malaria is not contagious
Malaria cannot be spread from person to person. It is only transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito.

In conclusion, malaria is a deadly disease that affects millions of people worldwide. While there is still much to be learned about the disease, understanding its causes, symptoms, and treatments is crucial in preventing its spread. By taking the necessary precautions and seeking treatment early, we can work towards eradicating malaria and saving lives.
