All over print and electronic media, stories of abuse abound. This is a shameful reflection of the exponential increase in the decay of our society. It should not be seen or heard that members of our society are harassed, intimidated and hurt by others. However undesirable, this has now become our sad reality. Abuse as a concept has many variations and forms. One could suffer emotional abuse, physical abuse or sëxual abuse to name but a few. The most prominent of them all being sëxual abuse. It is not so because it is the most important. It is this way because it is the most rampant. Rape, sëxual assault and revenge porn distribution are some of its many forms. Like a hydra-headed monster, the more heads we cut off, the more heads grow.
On a global scale, sëxual abuse is dangerously widespread. One out of four women has been sëxually abused or harassed. What this goes to show is that women get the short end of the stick most of the time. In Nigeria, sexual and gender-based violence committed against women and girls increased in 2020. This happened between March and May 2020, being the period in which national lockdown was imposed due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
