Raise Your Fists to Naija Hip Hop

Premier Naija rapper/singer Nneka dropped the title track off her upcoming album, Soul is Heavy. True to its name, the track is about a million pounds of rhymes, beefy Golden Age production, and socially conscious messages — namely proud ones.

For seven years the tireless guitarista Nneka has spent her time traveling between her home country Nigeria and Hamburg, dropping tracks in English and Igbo about issues in Africa. She predominantly raps on  “Soul is Heavy” before breaking out into a melodic belt and a hard rock hook about her roots,

Though anyone would raise their fists to this ardent track, it speaks most clearly to the Naija population. Historical figures and revolutionaries Isaac Boro, Ken Saro Wiwa, Jaja of Opobo make lightning-quick appearances on the hook.

Despite all the African collage work in the video, Nneka dons a New York Yankees cap. She does have a wide fanbase in the big apple, after all.
