Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State has said that the grand opening of the Shoprite Complex at the Polo Field Shopping Mall in Enugu would help boost the socio-economic lives of the state.Governor Chime who was speaking through his deputy, Mr. Sunday Onyebuchi at the opening ceremony of the shopping complex described it as a dream come true.In a statement sent to THISDAY by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Chukwudi Achife, he observed that the mall which is the biggest of its type in Nigeria would not only provide employment to the people but would boost the economy of the state in particular and the country in general. The State Chief Executive stated that the goods on display at the shop are affordable and therefore enjoined the people to patronize the company and have full value of their money.Earlier in an address, the General Manager of the company, Mr. Anton Waggnnaar disclosed that items sold by the company were 75% locally manufactured and of high quality and affordable. He also added that these items were cheaper than those sold in the open markets. The General Manager assured that his company would improve the Enugu State economy not only through payment of taxes but by employing the people. He stated that most of the Management Staff of the company were indigenes of Enugu State. The wife of the Enugu State Governor, Her Excellency, Mrs. Clara Chime who accompanied the Deputy Governor to the ceremony purchased items worth thousands of naira, which she later donated, to inmates of the Enugu State Motherless Homes. While handing the items to the acting Matron of the Home Mrs. Chinyere Ogbonna, the State First Lady said that the gesture was to express her happiness that the state has got the biggest shopping mall in the country. She thanked the Matron and Officers at the home for their humanitarian services and urged them to make good use of the items for the best interest of the babies. The acting Matron, Mrs. Chinyere Ogbonna expressed happiness for Mrs. Chime's gesture and promised to use the items for the growth of the children. http://allafrica.com/stories/201109160899.html |

Good question All4Niga, have always thought about that, we celebrate shoprite, Goodies, parkNshop, oasis, recently Spar; all are foreign retail companies milking the nigerian populace. Until Nigerians sit down and think creatively and developmentally we will be slaves even to our fellow african countries. We have well to do Nigerians that can take up the challenge of setting up establishments like this, but shortsightedness, lack of insight, laziness(quick fix/quick money mentality) and selfishness has blinded and obscured our sense of good judgement. Anyway i am privy to small indigenous company that has taken up the challenge, watch out for them, they are still in their very formative stages. Somewhere around Ogba they specialise in selling Fruits and Vegetables in a store environment. It's called Fruitivegies. |

Gejeans: Well said, it shocking to see that Nigerians can't even get together to open a freaking depeartment store , in all of nigeria, yet they build ridiculous mansions and drive the latest cars, goes to show that there is no ownership mentality in Nigeria, they prefer to suck the teats of foreign investors forever. |
Re: Shoprite Opens In Enugu by ournation: 5:46am On Sep 18, 2011 |
thats a good idea, but Nigeria Government should emulate other countries in the world that have varities of malls. which earns them a huge sum of money from the taxes people pay from the Goods they buy. all the best our nation Nigeria. more is expected of you |
Re: Shoprite Opens In Enugu by ournation: 5:53am On Sep 18, 2011 |
Nigerian should invest more on things like this ( big departmental stores and fast food cafes, Mcdonalds, kfc and pizza huts, brger kings like other developing countries not only focusing on oil funds). |

I dont know about you guys but i patronize Nigerian companies only. I use Glo and Visafone to make calls and browse the internet, I bank with Nigerian banks and shop at EVERYDAY EMPORIUM, Plot 26, Elelenwo Street, G.R.A Phase II, Port Harcourt, Rivers State which happens to be the biggest shop in PHC. There is nothing you can get from any South African shopping mall that you cant find at Everyday Emporium which is owned by two brothers from Anambra State. This company is in Abuja, Owerri, USA, Port Harcourt. Recently they have added a 3 star hotel to the one in GRA and you can order your prescription drugs online as well. This company has done well, their things are of high quality and affordable. Those in PHC should pay them a visit. Check their website: www.http://everydaygroup.com |

I really pity a lot of folks on here; stores will import tens of millions of dollars and even Walmart (in hundreds of millions) will import mainly from China and yet yall happy with t meanwhile Nigeria isn't offsetting her deficit some way. What a shame hearing the responses on here; Nigeria will be ready for all these stores the moment that we can start producing to offset their import deficits. |
Re: Shoprite Opens In Enugu by onyekosy: 7:55am On Sep 18, 2011 |
What are you guys sayin. Listen to me this is very simple, you wanna buy from shoprite you buy, it's not by force. They pleaded wit you to patronize them is not a sin- they are here 4 business and thats a biz strategy. If U don't want then face your keyboards and local markets. I'm not sidin any market here, all i need is quality goods and services CHIKENA! 1 Like |

manny4life:manny you make it sound like shoprite is going to be the only store in the mall. Com'on man stop talking like this is not good. Even walmart sell imported goods from china as well as long as they meet the required standards. Unless you ve not been to any of the shoprite stores, they sell groceries they sell groceries that are made in nigeria more than foreign made groceries. Me i don't know what you are on about o cos for all i know shoprite deals basically on food and groceries, all these big talk about trade deficit is just uneccessary. Sometimes too much of what we know can be a hinderance to simple result oriented ideas. Afterall, there are millions of standard supermarkets scattered across the SE/SS mostly owned by igbos and other Nigerians, they too sell both local and imported items, i don't see how that kills economic development rather they are exactly what is needed now not big talk of economics that will not yield any meaniful results besides making you feel mentally superior or sth. |

toba:Well, I hope this gives you stomach aches, the Polo park Mall is bigger than the Palms in lekki, lagos since this is all about competition to you. Now go and drink that cyanide concotion if you don't like that fact. Enwei!! |
Re: Shoprite Opens In Enugu by adminlo: 8:47am On Sep 18, 2011 |
i fear for the future of Nigeria if we allow all the foreign companies to open up department stores , fruits and vegetable stores which should be within the purview of Nigeria business. If they want to invest in Nigeria, they should invest in high tech sectors and services sector where we lack technical know how . China, India rejected tesco and walmart from setting up supermarket .even here in the uk , these companies have squeezed out life from local bakaries , fruit shops and vegatable etc. Now we have spar in nigeria, OMG . Cant our govt protect its own ? |

enugu is d fastest growing town afta lag,abj n ph,i may be wrong. Now i live n work in a private community radio fm station in enugu,as a marketer. I hav done a feasibility study about starting a fast pace urban private radio station and cost implications. I am just tied with the funding part. I need an investor to the project. The ROI is very high example we all knw at least that shoprite n its products manufacturers hav an advert budget for enugu nw. Also the upcoming cinema n many others. So clear for you to convince urself At this stage,i can establish and run one profitably,i have ready; my equipment suppliers, links to NBC.staff sourcing, link to ENSG,land et al,i can kick off in less than 6 months,if i get the funds now. I was born n bred in the town and know the business too. All i need is an investor or someone that can direct me to secure a loan to startup. About success rate,i can tell dat dis project is not a trial,10 years ago or so,cosmopolitan fm alias cosmo fm opened in dis town and shook the south east zone. Owned by efcc embattled former gov. Nnamani. It took the efcc to shut it down by. Hasnt got replacement since. Pls contact me only if u are serious for business on this project. tonnieobiora@yahoo.com |
