2023 U-17 AFCON: Golden Eaglets Suffer Defeat To Morocco

May 3, 2023 7:19 pm

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets lost 1-0 to Morocco in their second Group B game at the 2023 U-17 AFCON on Wednesday.

An early strike by Abdel Maali secured Morocco’s second win in the group.

The Eaglets will hope to bounce back from the loss when they face South Africa on Saturday.

Morocco got off to the best start as they took the lead just two minutes into the game thanks to Maali.

In the 13th minute a free kick was awarded to the Golden Eaglets but Emmanuel Michael’s effort went straight into the hands of the goalkeeper.

The Eaglets went close on 21 minutes but Abdullahi Abubakar missed from close range.

Three minutes into the second half Eaglets keeper Richard Odoh was called to action as he made a good save from a freekick.

On 54 minutes the Eaglets won a freekick after a brilliant play close to the goal area of Morocco but Hope Linus’ effort lacked power, goes through the wall but saved by the keeper.

It was the turn of Favour Daniel to miss from close range as the Eaglets continued to pile the pressure.

Yahaya Lawali had a chance to score for the Eaglets on 68 minutes but failed to convert.

The Eaglets continued to press for the equaliser but could not overcome a resolute Moroccan side.

Even almighty mancity lost to bottom place Southampton in the Carling cup. Football is like that. You win some, you loose some.

They can still bounce back and probably lift the trophy.

I wish them all the best.

The reason is simple.....you can't always cheat your way to success in youth football.........Select kids with the right age based on merit and under the guidance of a tactician proven in such youth tournaments..........Why has the NFA not found a way in assisting Samson Siasia to appeal his ridiculous ban by the ever corrupt FIFA?

This was my fear... Though our boys @ U17 are better than their big bros( the Super Eagles).

Moroccans I hear are even better than us in cooking, even though we are King of cooking in black Africa.
Seems like they are a step higher than us in many ways.

You're so wrong ! That team has a proper mix of the three major tribes and others. Nduka Ugbade, the team handler is not even an Hausa man;he is Igbo and a detribalized Nigerian as a matter of fact. If you have been following their games, you will discover that Ugbade oftentimes dishes out instructions to his players even in Yoruba language ! So,how could he have been able to pass instructions to the so called "Hausa team" in Yoruba language ? How is that possible, man ?

The current Golden Eaglets players are very young. As a matter of fact, they reflect their age both in character and physique. Have you seen their Senegalese counterparts ? I'll like to know what you think of their age. There is even a particular player in that team that I know personally. I know his parents and I even attended his naming ceremony some years back and I can tell you that he has not even clocked seventeen years, trust me

On Samson Siasia,I agree with your submission, absolutely ! NFF has to take his case up and do something about it. We can't just allow FIFA to render one of our best soccer tacticians and an ex international so useless !

Una no get indigenous names

Nigeria players born abroad like:
Bukayo Saka
Eberechi Eze
Osaze Odewingie
Chuba Akpom to name a few are answering their local names.

And these kids born in Nigeria are ditching their names to exclusively English names. If they don't have they should go to their parents and inquire about it.

Name is Identity in this contemporary world or did you see any foreign names in Morocco squad? Those are their indigenous names.

These boys should know that English names doesn't take you far in this life only your attitude and personality.

And Nigerians generally should stop this.
