The Escravos River in Delta State takes its name from the Portuguese word for slaves. The Portuguese bought a lot of slaves from that place in the 16th century. It is embarrassing that the river's name has not officially been changed. 3 Likes |

RedboneSmith: I don’t think Nigerians who have never been to the West have the same inherent understanding of racism. They’re not going to be arsed enough to go changing names. 1 Like |

1Sharon:The worst of it all is the name "Port harcourt" If only they can change that name to port + indigenous names. E.g port Boro, port Yobo, Port Finidi, Port Amaechi or Port Wike. It makes a lot of sense. I bet you if all these places were in Ghana, Burkina Faso or some other Africa countries the name would have been changed 50yrs ago. Nigerians especially Nigeria politicians still crave for a touch of slavery. 1 Like |
