Akoma leaned against the old oak tree, his gaze fixed on the horizon as the golden hues of the setting sun painted the sky. The cool evening breeze whispered secrets through the leaves, echoing his restless thoughts.

At fifteen years old, he was a boy with a rebellious spirit, questioning the traditions and norms that held sway over the lives of those around him.


Growing up in a small village embraced by nature, Akoma’s father, a skilled electrician, imparted his knowledge and expertise to his son, igniting a passion for understanding the intricate workings of electricity.

Meanwhile, his mother, a talented tailor and dedicated teacher, stitched together garments and nurtured young minds with her wisdom and compassion. Akoma was fortunate to have parents who embraced diverse talents and encouraged individuality.


In this nurturing environment, Akoma had witnessed the joyous celebrations of marriages within the village. Festive gatherings filled with laughter, music, and promises of eternal love were commonplace. Yet, he couldn’t shake the feeling of unease that settled within him whenever the topic of marriage arose.


Akoma’s heart yearned for something different, something untethered. He had seen marriages that crumbled under the weight of unmet expectations, suffocated by the perceived obligations that accompanied them.

The notion of being bound to another person for life seemed stifling, robbing him of his independence and freedom to explore the vast unknown.


Lost in his thoughts, Akoma was jolted back to reality by the sound of footsteps approaching. Maya, a spirited girl with a mischievous smile, appeared at his side. Maya, unlike anyone he had ever met, exuded an air of confidence and wisdom beyond her years.

Yet, the university was thousands of miles away, and the pursuit of his dreams meant leaving behind everything he had ever known.

Akoma’s heart was conflicted, torn between the allure of the unknown and the love he held for his village and Maya.

Maya sensed his hesitation and understood the turmoil he must be experiencing. She knew he had made a decision to stay true to his convictions, and she respected that. Deep down, though, she couldn’t ignore the lingering hope of a reunion.

As the conversation unfolded, both Maya and Akoma were careful with their words, treading lightly around the feelings that threatened to surface. It was as if they were dancing on the edge of a precipice, cautious of taking a step that might lead to an emotional fall.

The encounter ended all too soon for Akoma’s liking. He felt a surge of emotions rising within him, and he knew he had to leave before he could no longer hold himself back from getting emotional with Maya.

Maya, on the other hand, had wanted to express herself to Akoma, to tell him how she felt and what she hoped for, but she could read from his expressions that he wasn’t ready for such conversations. She decided to settle in first, find the perfect timing, and win him back, if that could ever happen.

As Akoma made to leave, Maya’s heart sank, but she knew that rushing things might push him further away. She chose to be patient, hoping that one day, the timing and circumstances would align, and their unbound hearts would find their way back to each other.

In the days that followed, Maya immersed herself in her studies and embraced the opportunities the university offered. She sought solace in her friendships and the bustling campus life, finding strength in knowing that she and Akoma were both on separate but intertwined journeys of self-discovery.

Meanwhile, Akoma continued his pursuit of knowledge and personal growth, finding comfort in his mentor’s guidance and the camaraderie of his new friends. Yet, amidst the academic pursuits and daily routines, thoughts of Maya lingered like a sweet yet elusive melody.

Little did they know that destiny had its own plans, slowly weaving the threads of their lives together, pulling them closer even when they were apart.

And so, the days turned into weeks, and the weeks into months. As the semester drew to a close, both Maya and Akoma found themselves standing on the precipice of uncertainty, their unbound hearts yearning for answers, and their paths unknowingly leading to an inevitable collision.
