The Lagos State Government has said the installer of the faulty elevator which claimed the life of a medical doctor, Vwaere Daiso, at the state’s General Hospital, Odan, has been handed over to the police.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had earlier ordered an investigation into the death of Ms Diaso, who was on a one-year internship at the hospital and had only about two weeks to complete her programme.

According to a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Strategy, Olumide Sogunle, the panel met with the lift installer and the installation company’s representatives.

The installer, the statement noted, was thereafter handed over to the police for questioning.

The colleagues of the deceased Wednesday protested the unfortunate incident, accusing the hospital management of ignoring earlier complaints about the faulty elevator which they claimed had been faulty for over three years.

Submission of findings
Highlighting the steps taken by the investigative panel, Mr Sogunle noted that a lift expert was invited to the accident scene to look at the lift and give a preliminary opinion, while other experts would now take the elevator out for a thorough mechanical and electrical examination.

“The panel was given 48 hours to conclude action, so it will submit a report of its initial findings on Saturday. And any other steps to be taken after that would be done by the appropriate authorities,” he said.

The statement added that the panel already met with the facility’s manager, management of the General Hospital, Lagos, and the Lagos State Infrastructure Asset Management Agency (LASIAMA), to unravel the circumstances surrounding the elevator accident.

The permanent secretary noted that six house officers and representatives of the medical associations were appointed as witnesses and as part of the panel.

He said the members of the panel include, “the Chairman of the Lagos State Health Service Commission (HSC), Permanent Secretary of the Health Service Commission, Director-General of the Safety Commission, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health; House officers and representatives of the medical associations.”

Any arrest that doesn't include those in charge of managing the hospital is a useless arrest.

Many people made complaints about the elevator. The proper thing is to prohibit all entries into the elevator so that everyone will use the stairs till the elevator is in good shape.

The management of the hospital is guilty of negligence.

For where, the hospital management will be blameless, if they have some certain surnames.

I am still begging compassionate Nigerians to have pity on me and save me from joblessness.

The little computer school business that I am doing is being threatened by the fuel hike. I can't continue buying fuel upto 2k everyday to run that place. It is unsustainable.

If any kind Nigerian would provide me with solar equipment I will be very grateful and my God will continually bless the person multifold.

Was the elevator being maintained in line with the manufacturers recommendations?

......of course it wasn't!

Its one thing to install; and another to maintain. Let them produce the service records if any exists!

This country na one funny contraption.

You go de on your own de struggle to make ends meet, government no send you oo! Once person negligence kill you, government go go find the person arrest am.

If she hadn't die, that elevator would still not be fixed. Asin, it must lead to someone's death first before they know that it is truly faulty.

When this man was neglecting his duties, government doesn't care ooo, as long as it doesn't lead to someone's death. Now that it led to someone's death, government suddenly realised he needs to be arrested

May we not be victims of someone else's negligence

Always reactive instead of being proactive. Even if u arrest his entire village it won't bring her back to life.

Looking different and defiant! Can we start from the contractor and the procurement process. Giving our penchant for money and buying substandard materials, who procure the fake elevator should have been the starting point.

Arresting the Installer of the Elevator in justice because he is not guilty. When he installed the Elevator it was working well. The maintenance and management of the Building is the one to arrest.

I heard that several complains have been made on the it but government of Lagos state kept quite. They have written letters for the maintenance but no action from the government. Now they went and arrest innocent person

Did they provide money for the installer to maintain the Elevator and the Installer ignore to do the needful? God will punish this evil government we have in this country

And what about the inaction of the hospital management despite several complaints about the faulty lift?
Also what about the non availability of blood at the hospital which would've saved the doctor's life?

Brother this is not a matter of fake product. This Elevator has stayed for years without maintenance and according to them, several complains have been made about it and Government refused to provide money for maintenance and now they went and arrest innocent person.

What is the fault of the installer? It is just like a car you bought, if you refused to maintain it and it brought problem for you and you start blaming the manufacturer or calling for his arrest.

Lack of maintenance is the cause of the accident and not faulty elevator. How can you install an equipment and not create a maintenance schedule for the past three years ?

What concerns the installer with this? Abi these people are just looking for someone to take the fall? Reports say this elevator has been faulty for 1 full year and nothing was done about it

The way Nigerians see everything as rocket science is simply overwhelming. Corruption and laziness has made many blind and useless. It's not enough to instal a lift. You must maintain it too. Now that they have handed in installer to the police what happens to the "maintainer"? And what happens to those who were told repeatedly as the story goes that the lift had a fault?

It was bad from inception apparently, and they didnt fix it. So everyone is culpable, including the asset management parastatal.
.
I trust Fashola. All this nonsense stopped when he was governor. You slack u get sacked. Everybody was up and doing in Alhausa and it was obvious across Lagos state.

Though it shouldn't have gotten to this stage, but this is what should happen.

Those in & out of government that failed to do the needful should be sanctioned.
