Global food prices surge as Black Sea grain deal collapse

The global food price index ticked up in July after Russia reneged on the Black Sea grain deal that allows safe passage of ships carrying grain from Ukrainian ports, the UN Food Agency said.

The Index which tracks the monthly international prices of cereals, vegetable oil, dairy, meat, and sugar averaged 123.9 points in July, up 1.3 percent from June. The increase was driven by a rise in vegetable oil and rice prices.

“Vegetable Oil Price Index registered a 12.1 percent jump in July after seven months of consecutive declines,” the report said.

“Sunflower oil prices rebounded by 15 percent due to uncertainties sparked by Russia’s decision to pull out of the Black Sea Initiative on grain and fertilizer export,” it added.

The UN-brokered deal, together with a parallel accord between the UN and Russia, provided a lifeline for hundreds of millions worldwide facing hunger and spiralling food costs, including in countries such as Afghanistan and Ethiopia.

However, Russia pulled out of the deal on July 17, saying it will attack any ship leaving the black sea region.

The cereal price index declined by 0.5 percent in June as coarse grain quotations due to increased seasonal supplies of maize from Brazil and Argentina declined by almost five percent and the potentially higher-than-expected production in the United States.

According to the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO), wheat prices rose for the first time in nine months due to uncertainty over exports from Ukraine and continued dry conditions in North America.

“Meanwhile, rice prices increased by 2.8 percent in July and by almost 20 percent over the past year after India prohibited exports.

FAO warned that the move “raises substantial food security concerns for a large swathe of the world population, especially those that are most poor and who dedicate a larger share of their incomes to purchase food.”

The Sugar Price Index declined by nearly four percent, the result of good progress in Brazil’s sugarcane harvest, improved rains across most growing areas in India, and subdued demand from Indonesia and China, the world’s top importers.

There was also a 0.4 percent slide in the Dairy Price Index, which is more than 20 percent below the July 2022 value. Similarly, meat prices dropped 0.3 percent since June.

This article missed out a lot of critical points and made Russia the scapegoat while exonerating the west.

The grain deal was supposed to supply cheap grain to Africa but all the grains were diverted to Europe while Africa received only 2.7% and Europe got over 90% meanwhile the media like this Nigeria copy and paste continued to claim it was to feed Africa shocked

Putin at the Russia Africa summit informed African leaders that he will supply 50,000 tonnes of grain free using alternative routes to six African countries and it seems Europe is unhappy about it.
This is why people are flying Russian flags at rallies in Africa, Russia also pledged to supply subsidised fertiliser and machinery to African farmers alongside grains.

Turkiye is desperate to get the deal back as they were making a lot of money reselling the grains while Europe was using the excess to feed their farm animals and using feeding Africa for propaganda.

Africa is satisfied with the current arrangement and won't fall for the western propaganda of tying global food price to just one failed deal which didn't take Russian demands into cognizance.

Moreover Belarus in conjunction with Russia has just delivered 3800 tractors to Zimbabwe farmers to enable them produce the same grain they buy from Ukraine thats another way of dealing with Europe by enriching African countries and makingAfrica less dependent on Europe, its only Nigeria that's still asslicking the west and not taking advantage of the current international power play but rather plans to be another puppet like Zelensky by going against Niger republic for western interests.

The wreckage doesn't affect Nigeria in anyway because our economy is already over-wrecked.

The world is facing a serious food security problem and food production and supply.

India has put regulations on their export to allow food sufficiency in their country.

Vegetables oil manufacturer don't make gains again unless they refine the oils with hexane chemicals to look very neat, clear, and smell well yet injurious to health especially now that we have sunflower oil disguising as groundnut oil.

Russian-Ukraine severed relationship has put a strain on world's supply of food.

In sum, Nigeria has to rise to conscious and intentional efforts to resurrect the agro-allied industry. Bleak days ahead for countries with no perspicacious leaders.

God will see us through

Lol…I still try to understand why we can’t feed ourselves in Nigeria…like agriculture is even represented in our flag but we can’t be self sufficient not to talk of exporting to other countries.

When is the promised grain scheduled to arrive? Do you think the greedy African leaders will share the grain, if it arrives, with their hungry people or will they just hoard it and sell it?

You’re on point jare you follow international news very well not those brainwashed folks . Ukraine representative in UN denied allegations that grains where diverted to Europe instead of Africa on live TV before Turkey confirmed it . Look at how this article is misleading making it seem like Russia is the bad guy.

The grain deal is a scam, the West were using Africa as excuse to blackmail Putin while overwhelming percentage of the grain was actually going to them...

Main reason Putin promise Africa free grain, fertilizer and some major agricultural machine..

Nigeria should be one of the biggest seller of grains in the world.
We have good land, good climate and big population.

Nigeria can make more money from agriculture than from oil.

Funny that the article claimed that Russia renegaded on the grain deal when it was in fact the west that refused to carry out their own part of the grain deal which left Russia with no choice than to back out from the deal.

I hope Russia knows Recep Tayyip Erdoğan cannot not be trusted, same with that indian's Modi when it come with dealing with the west.

It's good. Also remember that Ukraine is planning to build a grain pyramid in Lagos from the last quarter of this year. So Africa is a new bae to them.
Russia is trying to woo Africans more. We have suffered enough from the west. May be new things will start happening from Africa soon. That's why Nigeria and ECOWAS need to play safe with Niger situations. They can always negotiate to make all these reality. Nothing like war. We don't need that again in Africa. Gaddafi own should have thought us lessons.
