IGBO: mmaji mask The mask, carved in wood rather soft and covered with whitish pigment tending to ocher, gray, blue and blacks, is surmounted by a curious sort of crest / plume, in the secret language of symbols, is the sharp blade of a curved knife used especially for the yam harvest ( mma ji ) without, however, associated with the special cult of the famous tuber is a staple food of the Igbo people. Worn mainly by young people, these particular abstract masks appear in a dance group during a highly respected and appreciated by the Igbo, dance Okonkwo , animated and punctuated by the sound of marimbas. Ancient Igbo doors crave and design The intricately carved doors of the Igbo people of Nigeria form a third impressive group. Carved of a sacred hardwood, iroko, for major patrons, they served as entrance portals to an obi, the male meeting house. Iroko wood is associated with males, power and certain mysteries. The tree's spirit is ritually placated before felling. The large planks were extremely difficult to make. The doors are distinguished by the careful chip carving into V-shaped grooves and the contrasts of plain with densely carved areas. |

A fetish is a statue or object with magical power, like an amulet, talisman or good luck charm. In traditional, tribal Africa, especially in Zaire, these beliefs are manifested in some of the most expressive and magical power figures ever created. This exhibit brings together the relics of many peoples, all used for specific functions, usually to conjure away evil spirits or attempt to control one's destiny. |
