Growing up in this part of the world, there were certain words used while we play football on the streets. Most of us certainly thought the words were correct because we grew up hearing them examples are SANGALO and ESCOBAR.
I later got to know that the correct words are Bicycle Kick and Own Goal. We all know how we arrived at ESCOBAR which was because of the Colombian footballer who was shot after the 1994 world cup where he was unfortunate to score an own goal against USA which contributed to the elimination of the team but in the case of SANGALO I still don't know how they derived that.
I did some digging and these are my discoveries.
There are so many claims towards who invented bicycle kick or how it started.
The Chileans claim that it was invented by Ramon Unzaga in 1914 while the Peruvians believe that the first believe kick was scored in Callao in 1892.
The Brazilians would also try to claim ownership for the invention of this great acrobatic skill by saying it was first scored by Leonidas Da Silva.

Well this is still a mystery that remained unsolved, how did we arrive at SANGALOW?

"Sangalow" is derived from the name of the Brazilian player Zagallo who played during Pele's era.
It was after He did the bicycle kick that it started being called the "Zagallo". But trust everything that enters Nigeria. We always find a way to rechristen it either due to ignorance of the right pronunciation or in jest.
Anyways "Zagallo" soon became "Sangalow" and we lived happily ever after.
