Zidane had a preference for french players, those that played in the french league and those he coached in Castilla.

It was Zidane who scouted and recommended Varane to Madrid as a teenager and he wanted Madrid to also buy Hazard from Lille. But Mourinho vetoed the move saying he already had CR7 and wanted to strengthen other positions.

Once Zidane was manager, he revived his quest for Hazard to play to Madrid, even though he did not fit into Perez's Glactico 2.0 policy of buying young. Perez, against his better judgement, finally agreed, paying $100m+ plus add ons in transfer fee and €30m+ annual salary (double what the paralympian was earning at Chelsea) for a 28yr old who had been run into ground by Chelsea. When Hazard finally left Madrid, it was good riddance to bad rubbish

The Hazard transfer blunder, and the albatross that were his wages, has since limited Madrid in the transfer market. Add Zidane's reluctance to bring in a quality backup #9 to protect Benzema from competition, shafting full backs like Theo etc, he left the squad in a poor state.
