The legacy of the dark goggled Sani Abacha, the one-time military ruler of Nigeria is marred by an unfathomable greed as he's said to have siphoned $5 billion from the nation’s coffers, a sum whose absence was felt deeply across the everyday lives of Nigerians.

His death in 1998, marked an unusual moment in history—people danced in the streets, finding relief at the end of an era that had pushed them to the brink.

During Nigeria's most desperate hours, its supposed protector was funneling vast wealth into the vaults of countries known for their integrity and transparency.

In the year of Abacha's death alone, an astonishing $750 million was recovered from his family.

The relentless pursuit of these funds has drawn in an international cadre of nations, including the United States, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and France where this loot was and might still be hidden.

France just returned $150 million just days ago after 25years of the man's death.

Their combined efforts have yielded a return of up to $4 billion, yet much remains scattered across the globe, hidden within the complex labyrinth of the international financial system.

All this while Nigeria stands in the shadow of a title it never sought: the poverty capital of the world.

If not for the sudden cessation of Abacha's rule, these billions might have remained perpetually under the lock and key of one family’s avarice.

Greed, might not be the worst of ailments, but I still think it perilously sits atop the list of human failings.

It's a puzzle why one would hoard wealth so vast it's impossible to fully enjoy, if that person isn't sick in some way, with a blend of madness in its extremity.
And when it comes to the fate of the returned loot by our ancestor who keeps giving. Conversations about its effective use are scarce, leaving room for speculation and the whisper of rumors, that once recovered, these monies are falling prey to the same cycle of looting they were once liberated from.

This grim pattern appears to validate the criticism often leveled at governance in Africa, with Nigeria frequently cited as a case study in the entrenched greed that seems to besiege our leadership, a vicious ailment spread far and wide amongst the elites like the Sahara.
