Few reasons your air conditioner is consuming more power (electricity) than usual.

Perhaps, you recently noticed that your air conditioner is using a lot more energy than usual, these simple fix might just save you a little more energy.

1. No or improper maintenance. When was the last time you had your air conditioner checked/serviced by a professional HVAC personal? Your air conditioner's coils might be clogged or the filter may need to be cleaned. Dirty coils and dirty filters make the air conditioner work harder and consume more energy and can cause your energy bills to skyrocket as a result.

2. Bad AC Ducts (For ducted units). The air conditioner ducts might be blocked and if this is the case, they won’t operate efficiently. You may not feel much air coming into your room and so you head over to the thermostat to lower it a few degrees. This automatically causes the air conditioner to consume more energy than usual.

3. Bad capacitor. Capacitor is the device that delivers power to the motor (compressor) driving the air conditioning system. A weak capacitor can make your air conditioner work and stop at intervals.

4. Low refrigerant charge. This can result from leakage in your air conditioner, low refrigerant will affect the condensation and evaporation in your air conditioner, making it produce little or no cooling, and make your air conditioner consume more energy.
