Can a Nigerian above the age of 60 run and finish a marathon? by Tendd: 9:33pm On Nov 18, 2023 |
I have taken time to watch and observe many running races around the world and hardly would one find many Nigerians despite our huge population in diaspora. This year's New York Marathon for example had more than 53.000 runners but only 11 Nigerians, the oldest being 45 years.London, Chicago,Dubai ,Berlin Marathons, etc had also very few Nigerian runners, of which most were under 45,despite our massive presence in these countries.37 persons that were 80 years and above ran and completed the New York Marathon 2023.Can a Nigerian that is above the age of 60 run and complete a long distance race like a marathon for example?Who wants to be the first Nigerian to attain that feat? |

Bliss62: You shouldn't,if he is not well trained for long distance running though some started running at a relatively old age.Rather encourage him do some form of physical training regularly.Strength training has proven to be the most recommended since we become frail and weak due to muscle loss as we age. |

Foreigners do marathon for fun, fitness, sports, and to mark an event. Nigerians do it for different reasons. Most of these foreigners don't really aim to win but to finish the race and thick it in their bucket list. For Nigerians, the aim is different. Before I continue, what's the longest distance you've ever ran? |

anthonyuncle: We need to change our mindset regarding fitness and longevity. This explains why we have a relatively low life expectancy for Nigerians here and also those living abroad.A Nigerian abroad is mostly likely to get overweight due to overeating and inactive lifestyle.72 % of black adults in the UK are overweight or living with obesity while 4 of 5 black adult women in the US is overweight or obese.Somebody at 55 thinks he's very old to run or walk many kilometers. We need nollywood actors/actresses, content creators, musicians, comedians etc to begin running to promote health and wellness in the country.ln various marathons around the world,we often hear of celebrities that run for a cause or charity. We need that in Nigeria too and not obesity and consumerism as seen on our own celebrities.Any wonder why many are getting sick or dying every now and the? It isn't about me or what l do.l think that Nigerians both home and abroad deserves to live longer and that can happen if most begin to take part regularly on cardio and strength training. |
