Marston Riley, a 64-year-old music instructor at Maywood Academy High School, faced charges of child abuse following an incident with a 14-year-old student.

The altercation occurred on November 2nd, after Riley asked the student, who was not wearing the proper uniform, to leave the classroom.

The student refused and proceeded to insult Riley using profanity and racial slurs, and even hurled a basketball at him. The situation escalated when Riley, after taking out his phone to call for assistance, punched the student in the face, leading to a physical confrontation that was recorded on a cellphone by another student​​​​.

Riley was arrested on suspicion of child abuse, and the student was hospitalized for moderate injuries but later discharged. Despite the charges, Riley received significant community support.

A GoFundMe campaign raised over $189,000 for his legal expenses. Many colleagues, students, and parents defended him, citing this was not the first time he had been attacked, physically or verbally. Riley, who was forced to retire, faced up to one year in county jail if convicted​​​​.

Ultimately, the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office dropped the charges against Riley, taking into consideration the circumstances of the incident, his age, and his lack of a criminal record. Riley also completed a 10-week anger management course
