For the past two weeks, my Mercedes E320,w211, have been having problem of shifting gear from gear 1, once I engage the gear I hear a Gbi sound, and once the car is on motion I will be hearing a humming sound from the gear without changing gear.

Check the cruise control switch, make sure it’s off.
I observed that it can affect your gear box especially if car travels beyond cruise control gear limit when left on.

Meanwhile check the options

1. Change the Valve body and gear brain box
2. Check the Fuses
3. Check Gear oil level
4. When was the last time you changed the gear oil?

If above are all okay, consider changing the gear box.
