China Unveils Nuclear Battery With 50years Lifespan, No Charging Required by BrownEnvelop(m): 5:32pm On Jan 23 |
A Chinese startup has developed a tiny nuclear battery that it claims can generate electricity for 50 years without the need for charging. Just the size of a small coin, the company suggests that this technology has the potential to power a smartphone in the future (although there’s a lot of work ahead before that becomes a reality). Beijing-based Betavolt unveiled the miniature atomic energy battery on January 8, boasting in a press release that the technology is “way ahead of European and American scientific research institutions and enterprises.” Called BV100, the battery produces electricity by utilizing the energy emitted by a decaying radioactive isotope of nickel (nickel-63). In between the layers of nickel-63 are sheets of a single-crystal diamond semiconductor that are just 10 microns thick. It can store 3,300 megawatt hours and reportedly holds an energy density that’s more than 10 times that of conventional lithium batteries. According to Betavolt, it will be able to sustain its output for up to 50 years without the need for charging or maintenance. Measuring 15 x 15 x 1.5 millimeters, the battery’s power is 100 microwatts and the voltage is 3 volts. Bear in mind, that capacity is pretty meager and isn’t yet nearly strong enough to power an electronic device like a smartphone, let alone a laptop. That said, Betavolt notes that several of the batteries could potentially be used in series or parallel to power more demanding devices. Keeping a capsule of radioactive decay in your pocket might sound like risky business, but the company insists the battery is “absolutely safe.” So safe, in fact, they believe it could eventually be used to power medical devices such as pacemakers and artificial hearts. The company states there is no external radiation, adding that the battery “will not catch fire or explode in response to acupuncture and gunshots,” which is always a plus. Today, thermonuclear batteries are only used in aerospace engineering. For instance, the Voyager probes were fitted with a form of nuclear battery developed during the Cold War. Launched in 1977, the pair of Voyager spacecraft are still cruising through the outskirts of our Solar System. However, Betavolt believes their new product shows how nuclear batteries could even be used by consumers in everyday use. They say the battery is currently in its “pilot stage” and will soon be put into mass production. Looking ahead, the company plans to create more powerful batteries and wants to explore the use of different radioactive isotopes. “The company plans to launch a battery with a power of 1 watt in 2025. If policies permit, atomic energy batteries can allow a mobile phone to never be charged, and drones that can only fly for 15 minutes can fly continuously,” Betavolt said in their statement. https://nigerianstreet.com/2024/01/23/china-unveils-nuclear-powered-battery-with-50years-lifespan-no-charging-required-photo/ 4 Likes 2 Shares

Yinmu. It's not possible. Even if it's possible, big conglomerate that feeds off oil or current lithium won't let it be possible. They have invested too much on oil and lithium for one battery that will last forever to take it away. |

While this is an interesting innovation, the big powers wouldn't allow this to penetrate the market except they find a way to exploit it and make more money. However, why does a part of me feel sad? Those Nigerians addicted to social media or pornography are often challenged by epileptic power supply, with this battery, we should be prepared to see news like man reportedly dies while watching porn for 7 days. We all know when these types of battery for phones penetrates the market, their biggest market would be African countries where having power supply for 24 hours is just too good to be true. It is sad what Africa has become—I really understand the mind of a racist, who would want to associate with mediocrity? Whichever way, the capitalists are waiting for this to make even more money... |

Radioactive objects are potential cause of cancer, I just hope this would be well managed so it won't lead to fatal cancer casualties in the future as it would be carried around in mobile phones |

NinjaMetahuman: China is the world leader when it comes to lithium...the start-up is a Chinese company so it's very possible. |
Re: China Unveils Nuclear Battery With 50years Lifespan, No Charging Required by NinjaMetahuman: 7:44pm On Jan 23 |
TUANKU:China is the leader in manufacturing lithium battery but not producer of raw lithium. Apart from that, lithium battery is still struggling to fight oil and still getting battered. D Now imagine lithium people and oil companies fighting same enemy. I bet you, if it's true that there is technology like this battery that can last 50 years, it will never come to fruition in the next 3 decades at least. If it will even happen at all. 2 Likes |

Ojemedad:lol. Okay. Wait till they dish out propaganda about the battery causing cancer or killing people and western government banning it. You are here when Huawei (Chinese biggest tech company) went from second biggest mobile phone producers next to Samsung to absolute nothing. You are still doubting the power of the conglomerate that controls the western power and its media. LOL 1 Like |

NinjaMetahuman: You would have said same about AI if it was just a rumor. Listen, technology has gone farther than you think and as long as there is competition out there, nothing stops these countries from competing. The only thing you could say is that the power of such battery can be reduced to a few years and phones won't have charging ports. This way, Phones may have 5-7 years expiry date. 1 Like |
Re: China Unveils Nuclear Battery With 50years Lifespan, No Charging Required by NinjaMetahuman: 11:10pm On Jan 23 |
1x2x3:nope. It's not gonna happen because there won't be written rule anywhere for that to happen. Thanks to something called competition. If 50years battery is possible, the company that sells 30 years will outsell the one that capped it's own at 7 years. |
