Nigeria won all their group stage matches during last AFCON only to lose out at the knockout stage to Tunisia who qualified as best losers. Football can be very unpredictable, Cote D'Ivoire might just pull a surprise against Senegal.

Zambians tried so hard to come back from that goal deficit but they just couldn't convert their chances. I felt bad for them last night but I'm glad the hosts qualified

Geographically, yes; politically no. They'd rather see themselves as western part of North Africa, Just like Cameroun which decided to run to Central Africa for fear of Nigeria whereas geographically it belongs in West Africa. So, Mauritania is 100% North Africa for now.

They are a member of the West African Football Union (WAFU) but are not a full member of ECOWAS which currently officially has 15 member states. It used to have 16 member states until Mauritania pulled out.

Wikipaedia has this to say about them:
'Arabic-speaking Mauritania, was one of the founding members of ECOWAS in 1975 and decided to withdraw in December 2000. Mauritania signed a new associate-membership agreement in August 2017.'

Before, it used to be 16 teams (4groups) such that only the first and second from each group qualify for the quarter finals (8 teams).

However, this changed since last Afcon. 24teams now qualify to play in the qualification stage, the top two teams from each group qualifies automatically given 12teams then the remaining 4teams that make up the round of 16 stage are selected from the best third placed teams based on their performance (first by points and then by goal differences) in the group stage.
