IWA MOURNS THE PASSING OF RENOWNED NIGERIAN WRITERS PROF. ANEZI OKORO, NNOROM AZUONYE

The International Writers Association (IWA) has expressed its deepest condolences on the passing of two literary giants, Prof. Anezionwu Nwankwo "Anezi" Okoro and Nnorom Azuonye, both of whom have left an indelible mark on the Nigerian literary landscape.

In a press release issued by the Acting President of the International Writers Association, Wole Adedoyin, the organization grieved the loss of Prof. Anezi Okoro (17 May 1929 – 20 January 2024), a distinguished Nigerian writer and medical practitioner. Okoro was widely acclaimed for his 1972 novel "One Week One Trouble." His multifaceted career spanned academia, medicine, and public service, with notable roles such as President of the African Association for Dermatology and Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. Anezi Okoro passed away on 20 January 2024 after battling illness, leaving behind a legacy that has enriched the literary and medical fields.

Nnorom Azuonye (12 July 1967 – 21 January 2024), a publisher, theater director, playwright, poet, and advertising professional, is also mourned by the IWA. Azuonye, born in Biafra, contributed significantly to the literary community with works like "Letter To God & Other Poems" (2003) and "Funeral of the Minstrel" (2015). As the Founding Publishing Director & CEO of SPM Publications Ltd and the founder of Sentinel Poetry Movement, Azuonye played a pivotal role in nurturing and promoting literary talent. His passing marks the end of an era for the literary world.

The IWA acknowledged the immense contributions of Prof. Anezi Okoro and Nnorom Azuonye to the literary and cultural heritage of Nigeria. Both writers leave behind a body of work that will continue to inspire generations of readers and writers alike. The Association extended its heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and admirers of these distinguished authors during this time of profound sorrow.
