I think it's necessary cos you still need it to enter senior Secondary that's if you are schooling in Nigeria.

State secondary schools use the State BECE to promote to SS1. Unity schools use the Federal BECE to promote to SS1. Most catholic schools make it compulsory even though they might not use it to promote but if you want to transfer to SS1 of the catholic school, they require it because they trust it more than the result from private secondary schools. Private secondary schools do not use it.
