The declaration to end the killings was made by King Eyo Honest II. Many people have never heard this story before.
Barbaric practices such as twin murder, human sacrifice, and slave sacrifice were ended by King Honesty II of Eyo following the deaths of important figures.
In pre-colonial times, the murder of newborn twins was a common practice among the Efik and Ibibo people of Nigeria, until it was abolished in the 19th century by an indigenous king whose name was later attributed to Mary Slessor Replace.
During the pre-colonial and colonial periods, in some parts of the region (later known as Nigeria), especially in Efik and Igbo lands, the birth of twins was considered a bad omen and an abomination, that could bring destruction or calamity upon the society. Because of this, locals often leave twin babies in the forest to die.
This practice continued for a long time until the 19th century when an innovative king named King Eyo Honesty abolished the practice. And he declared no killing of twins.

The only ones altering history are the ones who claim some random Scottish woman “abolished the killing of twins in Nigeria”.

Oral history is now almost a fallacy while the documented ones are seeing as the next best thing after slice bread.

Our forefathers were cheated and had their glory taken by people the took care of due to lack of education in their time.

Luggard built on what was already on ground but he is seen as the architect of Nigeria

They had the paper and pen for themselves and gave us their religion while taking our lands.

Now that we have access to this paper and pen, can we then utilise it and pass to our generations the right information?

The saying, Until the Lion learns how to write, the tale of the hunt will always glorify the hunter, rings true. However, I am not diminishing the heroic works and sacrifice of Mary Slessor.

If they say Mary Slessor stopped the killing of twins, then I fully believe it. Africans demonise/spiritualized things they don't understand.

Mary Slessor is so praised in Christian missionary that it will be difficult to open our people's eyes to the truth

in another version of the story, the Calabar people worshipped twins because they believed that they're the living representation of their dual living deity. When the white man came, he told them that their deity is evil and everything about it evil. By demonizing their deity so they can accept the religion of the white man. So by accepting the teaching of the white man, everything about their old forms of worship were categorized as evil including twins (which were formerly revered as their God).

So there you have it. When the white man came, they met a highly organized and religious people so they had to distort our ways to enable them confuse us into their own.

King Leopold of Belgium did it in Congo

You feel smart now!

What's the source of the first book on efik history written by the white man.

Oral source, right!

I see.

So because, they wrote from an aboriginal oral source, which was quoted by other authors, makes theirs more authentic than ours.

Shakes my head.

You are doing well brotherly.

King Eyo Ita Honesty II stopped the sacrifice of twins in the area over which he ruled because he himself was a Christian. It was because of the opposition of the missionaries to the practice of killing twins that he abolished the practice.

However, the practice continued In other area which still practiced indigenous religion and held on to native superstitions.

He died about 13 years before Mary Slessor was born.
