Bernd Hoelzenbein, whose longtime club Eintracht Frankfurt confirmed his passing on Tuesday, passed away at the age of 78. He won the World Cup with West Germany in 1974.

Hoelzenbein, who played as a winger or striker, scored five goals for West Germany in 40 games.

Hoelzenbein won the penalty thatPaul Breitner converted to tie the score at one in the 1974 World Cup final in Munich against the Netherlands.

Dutch supporters harshly criticized Hoelzenbein for diving, but he remained true to his beliefs that it was a "clear penalty" for the rest of his life.

Germany won 2-1 and won their second World Cup thanks to a goal late in the first half from Gerd Mueller.

Hoelzenbein scored a late goal in the 1976 Euros final to square the score at 2-2 with Czechoslovakia, but Germany ultimately lost the game on penalties.

He spent much of his playing career at Frankfurt, where he still holds the record for most goals scored in a club's history with 160 goals in 420 games.

Over his 14-year tenure with Frankfurt, he won the UEFA Cup, three German Cups, and other honors.
