Avocados, also known as Alligator pear are distinct for their creamy and smooth flesh with a skin that can be coarse, pebbly or bumpy. Avocados are known to be Climacteric which means they continue to ripen even after harvesting. This explains why they are usually harvested when they are mature and still hard.

Just a quick one; Avocados are ready to eat when they feel tender upon touch, while some are ripe with green skin others need to be dark purple to show readiness to eat.
This brings us to the various species of Avocado.

Based on their shape, seed size and skin texture, we have more than 14 species of Persea americana. The most common variety is the Hass known for their oval shape, small to medium seed, smooth skin and creamy flesh.
Others include Gwen,Pinkerton,Bacon,Fuertes, Lula, Maluma, Zutano, etc

You can enjoy avocado as a whole breakfast and you will feel full for the rest of the morning until you decide to eat lunch.

Essential nutrients in Avocados
It is general knowledge that fruits and vegetables are packed with all essential nutrients and oils that are needed by our body to stay healthy.
Now let's move on to nutritional components of Avocado
1. Avocados contain— Omega -3-fatty acids
Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Antioxidants like Betasitosterol (plant sterol)
Phytochemicals-(Lutein and Zeaxanthin), Potassium and Copper.
2. One avocado fruit contains about
73% Water, 15% Fats, 8.5% Carbohydrate fibers and 2% Protein.

Benefits of eating Avocados to Health
1. They provide ample amount of MUFAs (monounsaturated fatty acids) and are rich in vitamins and minerals which are healthy for the heart.
Regular consumption of Betasitosterol may help to maintain a healthy cholesterol.

2. The presence of Lutein and Zeaxanthin in Avocados boost the presence of these phytochemicals in the eye tissue and equally minimize UV Light damage to the eye.

3. Adding Avocados to diets can help in the digestion of other fat soluble antioxidants such as Beta carotenes with the aid of the MUFAs present in them.

4. As a good source of Folate (folic acid in its synthetic form) which are beneficial in the development of foetus during pregnancy, adequate intake reduces the risks of miscarriage and neural tube abnormalities.

5. One avocado contains at least 16 mcg of Folate (Vitamin B9) hence consuming avocados can boost one's folate level and prevent depression.

How does it help with depression
Folate helps to prevent the build up of Homocysteine–a substance that can impair circulation or supply of nutrients to the brain and also associated with depression and cognitive dysfunction.

6. Avocados help to regulate appetite, feed gut friendly bacteria and may reduce risks of diseases including Type II Diabetes and Obesity.

RISKS
Just as it is adviced to eat fruits in proportion and according to one's daily health requirements.
Avocados may cause unpleasant digestive symptoms in people with Irritable Bowel Disease(IBD) because of the presence of FODMAPs—Fermentable oligo-di-monosaccharides and Polyps that cannot be digested by some people. This can further cause bloating, stomach pains, diarrhea it constipation.

Avocados having a high fat content is a pointer towards consuming them in moderation to prevent unintended weight gain.
